We recently connected with Feta Topalu and have shared our conversation below.
Feta, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
“Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come. ” – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, actor
I can say, after 6 years of blogging and content creating, that consistency is what got me to where I am today. It’s the building block that I laid day after day that created the bridge I’m walking on now.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I first got married (2014), I had to cook so we could eat and stay alive! It was a necessity. I realized I really enjoyed it and instantly fell in love with cooking. My dear husband (Val) encouraged me to start a food blog. Only a year later did I take his advice and go for it. In 2017, Fetty’s Food Blog was born. Over the years, I’ve taken online and in-person photography and food styling classes because I’ve wanted to improve my craft and make it an actual paying job. When the pandemic hit, my office closed down temporarily, giving me a chance to go all in. After a few weeks of full-time cooking and photographing, a company came to me and asked me to buy one of the recipes I made with their product. I gave them a price. They returned and asked to pay me 5X more for the recipe and photograph! When the check came in, I brought it to my husband and told him there is money in food blogging! And that’s where it went from there.
Day after day and year after year, I pursued what it was that gave wind to my sails. I kept the passion but tweaked the method and it was a matter of time that I started seeing results.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The digital content world can seem very competitive. Everyone seems to be trying to create the next viral post or piece of content. What I wish I understood is that there’s a lot more people like me still trying to figure things out and that it’s okay to reach out and message someone in the same running field as you. Blogging is not a career with in-depth resources to grow/manage/expand your business, at least not 5-6 years ago.. The best advise I got has always come from fellow bloggers who are willing to help.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Good quality content is always a seller. I used to reach out to brands to partner with them and ask about upcoming campaigns with little luck. Now, I can barely keep up with brand partnerships that are aligned with my vision. When I took a photography class a few years ago, a teacher told me to look at an image and ask myself what I liked about it. I examined beautiful food photography and styles. Then, when I was photographing my next piece of content I tried to incorporate that thing I loved. Overtime, with lots of practice, it becomes your own style and brand.
