Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Fernando Gomez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Fernando , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
When I was about 16 years old my sister loved taking photos. She would get great pictures and interested me. I would see her taking a picture with her phone and I would tell her there is a different angle to capture that moment. So then i began to take pictures as well but tried to capture it from a different angle nobody normally sees it from. 2 Years later, after I Graduated I purchased a nice starter kit camera. I purchased a Canon Rebel t6. I didn’t know how to use the camera when I first purchased it. So I would mess around with it and take pictures of in house ideas, such as shoes, posters, etc. After about a year of messing around with all my equipment I finally got the hang of it. I was self taught and had figure it out all on my own. I then began to take pictures for my high school Baseball, Volleyball, and Football team. Captured some amazing pictures that I didn’t think was possible. I would also take my camera to the huge SuperShows here in the state of Colorado and capture pictures of all the vehicles in the car show. My name would slowly get recognition for the beautiful pictures I took. Getting hundreds of friend requests and seeing all my pictures posted and being tagged on social media was cool to see. So I took up a notch. I wanted to get into something a little more interesting. A buddy of mine that used to live out in Colorado Springs at the time gave me a once in a life time opportunity. He gave me a call and offered me a great deal. We has throwing a car show in Colorado Springs with great concert line up and wanted to see if I’d do some photography work. I then headed down to Colorado Springs and was ready for the opportunity. I got there and got to meet the artists. I had the opportunity to shoot pictures for 69 Boyz, and Mike Jones, I got a huge connect with them and that’s when my career began to take off. I eventually started talking to them artist personally along with there managers. Word to mouth my name began to get well known. I also did a little bit of Graphic design work in High school, but was really into it at the time. I seen lots of concert and CarShow flyers and thought to myself I can do that and make them 10x better. So I worked on 1 specific concert flyer that was coming up at the time to see how it came out. It took me a week or so to put it together but came out amazing. I finished 4 days before the concert came into town and it went viral. It was a Christmas Classic Concert with performances by Dogg Pound, Twista and Headliner Bone Thugs and Harmony. I posted the flyer in my Instagram page and Twista liked my post, reshared it and posted it on his page. Also he started following me along with his manager. After all this happened I knew that my work can be great and can be well know. After that it took off. Lots of artist and management started to recognize my name and would contact me when they came into town. Late September of 2019 I then got a call to work with a record label called Rogue Records. I started doing all there photographer work for they’re concerts here in Denver. After that, I knew this was going to big for me. 3 months later, December 5th, 2019 I got booked for another big concert. Lil Flip Aka the Freestyle king was in Denver, Colorado performing live. I shot some pictures for him that night. We talked, connected and soon after that I was booked every weekend starting January 2020. Now from that day on I work with huge name artist, I’ve worked with Lil Flip, Twista, Paul Wall, SauceWalka and his whole crew, Peso Peso, The Mexican Ot, Yg, Ohgeesy, Day Sulan, Mike Jones, Ja Rule, Ashanti, Fat Joe, Bone Thugs and Harmony, Kap G, Lil Cas, Lil Jon, Gorilla Zoe, Dogg Pound, Gangsta Boo and many many more. I have lots of pictures in my Instagram page @GomezPhotographing. So now I do lots of artist Concert Flyers and Photography while them come into down. From spending the whole day with them, to going to the venue at night to capture some pictures. I also started my owner Lowrider Magazine called “Custom Creations Magazine.” Right now I have 3 issues of the magazine out and released. I started the first 2 issues all by myself. I did all of the Photography, articles, page layouts, prints. I mean everything. I just recently got a few helpers on my team. Hyna Blvd out in Denver Colorado and Junior B. Out in Colorado Springs. Without them two I couldn’t make the magazine to what it is today. They are such a huge help and we are doing an amazing job. I want to give them a huge shoutout for all the love, support and help they do. I love my team and glad that we can put this together for your Lowrider community. We just threw our 1st annual CarShow August 26th here in Denver Colorado. It was just a huge turnout we sold out of all Vehicle spots and Vendor spots as well. With hundreds of beautiful vehicles and hundreds of spectators it was a great turnout. I want to thank everyone who was involved such as my Vendors, Sponsors, and spectators. Without you guys none of this is possible. We will definitely be throwing another show next year. Stay tuned for that. I’ve never expected to be able to do all this when I was younger. All I have to say is if you work hard enough at something you love to do, keep pushing and grinding and give it 1000% always. Hard work will eventually payoff. Just be patient and give it time. Don’t try and rush anything, when it happens it happens.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I answered all this on the first slide.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on Social media by personal knowing people and getting advice and using the correct hashtags and @‘s for the correct posts. I personally feel like you can get lots of audience and exposure if you do a little bit of research and looking at similar posts that you are going to be posting about.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Some advice I would recommend for managing a team is trust the people you work with. Make sure your team also loves the work/passion that you do. Anybody can put a team together but, when everyone on your team loves doing what your doing it’s going to be super successful and will get you a long way.
