We were lucky to catch up with Fernand Val Adrien recently and have shared our conversation below.
Fernand Val, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking-taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
In 2022, when global uncertainties clouded economic outlooks and the socio-economic situation in Haiti threatened the stability of my primary business, United Shipping & Logistics, I faced a pivotal yet precarious opportunity. The US economy itself was on shaky ground, further complicating my decision.
The opportunity was to acquire ArtMoves, South Florida’s oldest and most reputable fine art handling company. This wasn’t just a business expansion; it was a venture into a sophisticated and niche market during a downturn. My passion for fine arts and seasoned expertise in logistics gave me a unique perspective on the synergy between these fields. Despite the economic risks, I saw a compelling integration of art handling with strategic logistics, promising a new frontier for my career.
Choosing to acquire ArtMoves was a considerable risk. The art world is intricately nuanced, often guarded, and relies heavily on established reputations and trust—attributes that a new player can take years to build. Furthermore, the financial strain was significant. Venturing into this niche market required substantial capital, which is particularly challenging to secure for a business perceived as new, despite my background in a related industry.
However, driven by my belief in the potential of combining art with logistics, I pursued the acquisition. The initial months were fraught with challenges. Aligning ArtMoves with the high operational standards of United Shipping & Logistics required not only financial investment but also a cultural shift within the company. We augmented our services with advanced technology solutions and expanded our offerings to include private sales and curatorial services, striving to provide a holistic art handling solution.
Today, the journey continues to be both challenging and rewarding. Financial hurdles remain as we strive to secure the necessary funding to sustain and grow operations in a market that still views us as newcomers. Acceptance within the niche art logistics community has been gradual, requiring persistent effort and engagement to build trust and establish credibility.
Despite these ongoing challenges, the decision to acquire and transform ArtMoves has led to significant achievements. We have attracted new clients, including major galleries and private collectors, and we are gradually being recognized as innovators in art logistics. This experience has taught me that embracing risk is not just about managing the initial challenges but also about enduring resilience and adaptability in the face of long-term obstacles.
This path has not only tested our capabilities but has also affirmed the importance of vision and persistence in overcoming barriers. It underscores that in business, as in art, the true value of a risk taken is often revealed not at the outset but over time, through steadfast commitment and continued effort.

Fernand Val, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Fernand Val Adrien, a pioneer at the crossroads of logistics and fine arts. Based in the vibrant city of Miami, I embarked on my professional journey over a decade ago with the founding of United Shipping & Logistics. What started as a robust regional freight and logistics enterprise has now expanded into a significant player across Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
My deep-rooted passion for fine arts, coupled with my entrepreneurial spirit, led me to acquire ArtMoves in 2022—Miami’s oldest and most esteemed fine art handling company. This strategic acquisition was not just a business decision; it was a personal one, born from my aspirations as an art collector and my expertise in logistics.

From meeting deadlines to ensuring the quality of our services, we understand that our clients need to trust us with their most valuable assets. This consistency in delivering as promised has helped us build long-term relationships.

3. Creating Unique Experiences: Every client interaction is viewed as an opportunity to create a unique and memorable experience. We listen carefully to their needs and challenges, adapting our services to exceed their expectations. This personalized approach ensures that clients feel valued and understood, not just served.
4. Word-of-Mouth Marketing: As a result of focusing on reliability, expertise, and tailored experiences, our clients become our biggest advocates. Satisfied clients are more likely to share their positive experiences with peers, colleagues, and friends, which has become our main source of new business.
5. Leveraging Positive Feedback: We actively encourage our satisfied clients to share their experiences, whether through case studies, testimonials, or direct referrals. This not only enhances our credibility but also amplifies our reach within the industry.
By emphasizing these core values, we’ve reached a point where referral is our most significant source of leads. It’s a testament to our approach that clients not only return to us but also bring others along, which is incredibly rewarding and a clear indicator of our service quality and client satisfaction.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
To manage a team effectively and maintain high morale, I empower my team members by actively fostering a culture of trust and recognition. Trust them with responsibilities and recognize their achievements openly. This approach not only boosts morale but also transforms every team member into a motivated and accountable contributor, ultimately driving collective success and innovation.
