We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fergie (rebecca Ferguson) a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Fergie, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
Over the past year, we’ve seen an array of design trends emerge—some fleeting, others enduring. One I couldn’t escape and that continues to dominate is the use of gradients combined with a grainy texture as backgrounds on social posts, websites, printed media, you name it, it’s everywhere. I don’t think it’s going anywhere, but removing the grainy texture will make it fresh for this new year.
Looking ahead, I reckon 2025 will be the year of bold, vibrant, and unapologetic design—a perfect formula for standing out in my opinion.
I think we’ll see use of bold colour combinations like electric blues with neon greens, light turquoise with vibrant peach or deep purples with bright pinks. High contrast colour combinations. These bold choices will make brands unmissable on social feeds and emails and grab attention in milliseconds.
Maybe it’s controversial, I actually think the opposite of Pantone on colours for this year, brown isn’t it, I think even neutrals will be rich like terracotta, forest green and spring blue. Naturally, as The Anti-Beige Designer I welcome this move away from muted tones like beige, sand, and champagne, encouraging even softer pastel-focused brands to explore bolder alternatives, adding in even a small use of a brighter or even neon hue to their palette.
I think there will be a new take on minimalism, clean layouts with quirky fonts, asymmetrical shapes or hand-drawn doodles, making the usual sterile minimalism a bit more fun.
Similarly nostalgia might be used in an edgy fashion, old-school with a modern edge like metallics, neon or chunky fonts.
Now that I’ve mentioned fonts, I think oversized typography, big, bold type that dominates graphics will give off a confident vibe when paired with a minimal, clean graphics.
These bold design choices will be invaluable for brands looking to stand out in an oversaturated market, grabbing attention instantly and leaving a lasting impression. In a sea of sameness, they’ll signal confidence, creativity, and a forward-thinking approach.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always been creative for as long as I can remember. Art was my favourite subject at school, I was far better at it than maths! So, it was a natural progression for me to continue my creative studies at university, where I earned a degree in Graphic and Digital Design. From there, I spent 12 years working across various industries as a UX Designer, crafting websites and apps while also delving into visual design and branding.
In 2023, I made the decision to say goodbye to the corporate 9-5 and fully commit to my dream. It was terrifying, but ultimately the best decision I’ve ever made. After years of contemplation, the moment arrived, and I took a leap of faith in myself. That leap led to the creation of my own design studio, where I now produce unapologetic, dynamic, and vividly colourful work that celebrates brands daring to do things differently.
I’m somewhat famous for hating beige because neutral, washed out tones just don’t spark joy for me. This lead me to officially trademark ‘The Anti-Beige Designer’. I don’t believe anything is too much and being extra is my default.
I’m based in London but working globally, I collaborate with entrepreneurs and business owners to build iconic, scroll-stopping visuals to get them noticed, memorable and unique brand identities and websites that work with ease. My work is all about helping brands speak directly to their ideal clients through tailored, engaging websites and messaging.
What sets me apart is the way I support my clients. I can get them from 0 and deliver everything they need, from branding, website, social graphics and more. I’m setting them up for success with everything they will need, and empowering them with the tools and techniques to sustain and grow their brand long after we’ve finished working together.
I’ve worked with Bravo Studios, creating tutorial style content about their no-code app building tool for their YouTube channel, and I have been working with Adobe for many years now, it started out small and has built up from being an ambassador to now being a CC Expert and training thousands of creatives across 6 continents in the past year. A real pinch me moment was being a speaker at their huge design conference Adobe MAX for three years in a row! The first year was during the pandemic so everything was online, but I had twenty thousand attendees in my first session which was mind blowing. I’ve also made many appearances on Adobe LIVE, streaming projects and sharing my creative process with others in the design community.
In 2025 I can’t wait to work with even more businesses and brands than I did last year. Plus I’ll also be opening the second half of my business which is focused on supporting those wanting to transition or start their career in the design world, specifically in UX and Product design. I’ve been mentoring since 2020 on one-to-one calls and also giving portfolio reviews, and I’m a mentor for Mento Design Academy students. This year I want to open this up and share my knowledge and experience with others, because when I started out it wasn’t so easy to gain the information I needed. UX was a new discipline, there weren’t many online resources or meet-ups and I had to stay up to date by reading and studying. I was the only designer at my first company, so knowing how that felt, I want to be the senior designer I needed as a junior and help others.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has definitely been word-of-mouth and referrals. People don’t just recommend me because of the results they get, but because they enjoyed the process of working with me. I think the level of experience, professionalism and skill I bring to the table is why I’ve earned their trust.
Instagram, Bēhance, LinkedIn and YouTube have also been a source for generating leads. These platforms have given me the chance to showcase my work and attract people who vibe with my approach. I’m looking forward to growing my content to bring in even more of the right clients.
Even though I don’t strictly have a niche, my positioning as *The Anti-Beige Designer* definitely helps pull in people who want something different.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a creative is helping bringing someone’s vision to life. I love that moment when they have a huge smile as they realise they don’t have to fit into a box—or play it safe—to stand out. That really lights me up.
The creative process is where I thrive. I love brainstorming, researching, and sketching up ideas until ‘the one’ hits me so clearly I can practically see it in front of me. It’s such a buzz when that happens. And honestly, I enjoy pushing creative norms—it’s fun shaking things up. Take the wellness space, for example. Beige and sage have had that world in a chokehold for ages. I’ve had two clients in that space, and both came to me thinking they needed to stick to that safe palette. Once I showed them what they *could* have—something bold, exciting, and so much more *them*—it was game over. They trusted me, went for it, and they’ve never looked back.
I also love helping clients build efficient websites that work hard for their business. We all know how frustrating it is to use a “bad website”. What’s rewarding about that for me is seeing someone go from hiding their online presence out of embarrassment to confidently sharing it with everyone. When their website reflects their vision and runs smoothly, it allows them to focus on growing their business, and that’s a win for everyone.
The absolute best part, though, is knowing my clients feel confident, excited, and proud of their new branding or website. That’s what makes it all worth it.
