We recently connected with Felix “Spillz716” Cuevas Rodriguez and have shared our conversation below.
Felix “Spillz716”, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Growing up in The cities westside of Buffalo New York there’s not that many opportunities. My Father past when I was 2 in Angola Ny and my mom could only do so much with me. I ran to the streets and ended up landing myself in prison for 6 years. After paying my debt to society I worked in the kitchens for restaurants in Buffalo. That was NOT my calling! Music always been in my life I just never chose to take it serious. Then one day, I quit my job and decided to start somewhere in this path I’m about to take. I was so tired of not feeling complete. Like, I wasn’t serving my purpose. I decided to put my self out there on Facebook and ever since I’ve been on takeoff. I landed 5 songs writing by me on my radio station. I’ve been on fat Joe, Vado, Dj Bandana Blacks mixtapes. My first music video did over 57k views. I’ve been on tour to Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Georgia and I also opened up for Bizzy bone from “bone thugs N Harmony” I never want to go back to that non purposeful life. Music was the best decision I ever made.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’am a Latino HIPHOP and RNB song writer. I also write short films and mesh them musically. I play some piano & guitar. I write so many different styles and as you will get to know me you will be able to identify that by listening to the different sounds in my music. A lot of different things separate myself from others like being able to rap and play the guitar at the same time. How many people do you know that can do that ? Also my sorting process is so different. If it doesn’t come to me Genuinely the song may not get finished for a week or month. Sometimes months. The thing I’m most proud of is that I actually took the initiative to chase my dreams.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve built my social media and business by wearing my own clothing line in my music videos and also dispersing them to other local and out of town artist and fans. My advice if your staring a business is keep it business.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn my attitude. I wasn’t always the easiest to work with. I was very hard headed and very mush so ignorant. During my prison term I learnt a lot of respect. Running into other with the same attitude with only cause chaos. I had to switch that up and started to listen instead of talking. If I wanted and demanded respect, I had to give it. I noticed that and I got rid of that mind set. Although, I’am tempted sometimes I always reflect on the outcome that came with those decision makings.
