We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful FELIX SIERRA . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with FELIX below.
FELIX, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I currently am living off of all different avenues and incomes I have that stem from my creative works. I always had a 9-5 job as everyone, because it’s the only way we’ve known to make money, use our hands and follow directions. I had a great job that paid me very well and I loved! But I wanted to do something that is not just for me. I wanted to keep perusing my passion of music and helping others, and go 100% on this life mission. When I made this decision, I already had a demand for our services so I calculated that in as I embarked in the entertainment industry and left my previous industry. Because we had a lot of work already, I had to rush through the proper steps of structuring a business, and made some mistakes there that were costly. Amongst other business dilemmas, there have been lots of help and progression as well in dealing with things that go wrong. Although these times are the hardest to deal with as its such a stressful ordeal, but in my thoughts, I have to tell myself that I am blessed to have these issues for a company that I created, own, and love. We currently have more than 15 bookings a month and continue to grow into bigger and better paid events. This progression wouldn’t have come without that blood, sweat, and tears shed during the growing pains of running a self sustaining entertainment company.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
SM Familia Ent. is my home grown brand of entertainment services. I mainly run a band, but we offer so much more than that. Besides contracting out my band for gigs from local breweries/restaurants to big venues and/or festivals, we also have enough equipment that we rent out and offer sound PA systems and engineering. Besides making money on our performances, we also collect royalties from all our online content, collect for credit usage, and normal payout from our shows through our performing rights organization. My goal was to be a “rockstar” making lots of money to play big theaters and stadiums. But as I went through the ups and downs of following my dreams, I realized that the lottery of actually “making it big” is a 1 in a million chance. So as I dove in deeper, I realized how many people make lots of money in the industry, but are not in the limelight. There are so many ways to make money in this industry, that I started paving multiple avenues for my business to grow in. Royalties come from music that I make with my band, and other music I produce strictly for film or TV. So even if the rockstar dream didn’t pan out, as long as there is a demand for tv shows and movies, I will always have an opportunity for financial gain in a job I love.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media has been and continues to be a huge source of our work. I never was one to be posting and being deep into social media, but over time, came to realize how hurtful it is to not have an online presence. The bigger jump in our social media happened when I started being real with our content and professional with the presentation, and gave a less importance to the numbers. When we put the thought of trying to post what the trends were at the time or how we can get the most likes, we seemed to diminish the quality of originality to our content. We needed to keep our originality that or fans liked about us. When we stopped putting that thought into our process, we became more conscious of how and what we posted about. The more we continued this and made it a consistent thing, we got more engagement, and thats what we lost sight of before. Engagement is more important than the popularity.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
NFT’s are another great avenue for artist’s and creatives together. Although we have not started any NFT project, we really hope to get into that as well. For musicians, my understanding is that you could utilize this new wave of technology into art or music drops. It’s another great way for a musician to make money, but also offer the customers a piece of what could be valuable pieces of art later down the road. As our world turns to more of an electronic world, this is a great way to make up extra income for creative minds and their intellectual properties.
