We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Felix Agosto. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Felix below.
Felix, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I first began making found sculptures in high school as a way to express myself. I didn’t want to do a normal PowerPoint or drawing if I could build something instead. This sentiment carries over to my photography as well. My goal is to give people something they haven’t seen or felt before.
Ever since I was a child, I have always been fascinated with how things work. In middle school, I was drawn to taking apart electronics and machines to figure things out. If I didn’t understand how something worked, I would research the problem until I did.
Eventually, I found great importance in adding an element of storytelling to my work. As I began my journey in public speaking, I realized the power of empathy and how the right story could help to change someone’s life. After this revelation, I started to add the story of how each sculpture was constructed to my website, as well as what message was present in the piece itself.
In my life outside of my work, I try to be as open as I can to help those around me who may be able to relate to things I’ve been through, and this idea is also present in my work.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Right after I had graduated high school, I was sexually assaulted by a female friend and then again a year later by another female friend. This had lasting effects on my self-esteem and sense of self-worth. Despite how hard I fought, the ramifications of their actions seeped into every corner of my life until I took back control. I began to pursue EMDR therapy and started speaking publicly about what happened to me in order to change the stigma around men being assaulted. I have since spoken at a local high school and shared my experiences so that those who need to hear it know that they are not alone.
