We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Felisha Lugo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Felisha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
One of the greatest personal risk I have ever taken is deciding to become a business owner. It changed my life forever.
I always knew the traditional corporate world was not for me. The hours, the limitations don’t honor where I want my life to go. Once I had my first child a roaring fire lit up within me. Prior to Our Community Tax Services LLC I was in health in wellness.
I was and still am a licensed massage therapist and certified personal trainer. It was a passion I had to serve people doing something I genuinely loved., I come from an athletic background, played basketball at the collegiate level. Then I was injured and my hoop dreams ended. Yet in the pain my entrepreneurial spirit was birth. After a half a decade in health in wellness I knew there was more for me.
My dreams are to create generational wealth for my children’s children, children. I come from poverty & I decided it will end with me.
Getting in the financial field is something I could have NEVER imagined (I was majoring in Criminal Justice in College) but taxes made soooo much sense. There is job security, because all American have an obligation to pay taxes on their income which makes this industry recession proof.. The brown & black communities, let alone public schools have great need for crucial information involving how to handle their taxes and manage their money. My TRUE passion is helping people, serving them, adding value to their lives.
Opening my own virtual tax office offered me the freedom to be present in my life, have work life balance and never having to risk being penalized or losing my job to be there for my family WHENEVER they need me. The greatest risk I have ever taken is betting on myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I locked in with the tax industry one because the money I could make for my family is great, it is a recession proof industry, and it is a skill I can pass down into my family.
We offer individual & small business tax preparation along with small business bookkeeping services and tax planning.
Our goal is to educate the tax payer on the tax game. For example claiming government credits that benefit them. Helping clients lower the amount tax they pay each year. And teaching clients how to keep their business finances in order.
I believe what sets my business apart is that our doors are open year round, we want to be available and an asset to our community.
Most tax preparers do not educate their clients and we take so much pride in the educating our clients.
Our long term goals are to open up office spaces where we teacher classes on taxes, budgeting and saving, credit and real estate to all ages and walk of life.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source had been referrals. When you treat people with love and honesty it’s priceless and they will share their experiences with your business with others.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn thinking that all my friend and family would be the ones supporting and hiring my business for them. It was tough it’s just natural to want all your people to work with you and your business. What you will soon learn it will be people you have never met that will support your business the most.
