We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Felipe Picazo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Felipe thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents raised me right! Coming from immigrant parents and even being an immigrant myself I always had to learn to blend in. Don’t stand out, but always work harder than anyone else. My parents taught me that just because someone says you can’t doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. They always told me to be whoever I wanted, even if that was the unconventional artist/ creative that I became. You don’t typically see many designers in Mexican culture but my parents didn’t judge or stop me. They supported me all the way and did everything in their power to make sure I succeeded. They saw in me what I show the world today. My parents sacrificed everything for a better life for my brother and I. They left their homes in Mexico so that I could do what I want. That sacrifice weighs on me everyday. With every action I do I think about how much they gave up and how nothing I do will ever be as hard as that decision so just have fun and enjoy it. Thats what they would want more than anything, is for me to be happy doing what I love.

Felipe, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Felipe Picazo and I help brands tell their story effectively. Wether thats through branding or content. You don’t have to own a business to have a brand. You are a brand, what you show the world is your brand and sometimes people get lost and don’t know how to show it the right way. We all have the gift of uniqueness inside of us, I just bring it up to the surface. While I mostly specialize in brand identity and strategy for business owners I recently started doing content strategy. I really enjoy it because it really is just another creative outlet for me. The thing that sets me apart from others is my creative perspective. I see the world different and that’s special. I have discovered a creative process that allows me to tap into my full creativity in a way most can’t. And I use those skills for others to soar! The thin I am most proud of is that I do it all myself. I do the strategy, the writing, the presentations, the design, the content, all on my own. And that is empowering. I feel unstoppable sometimes. I just want people to know that each and every one of us is unique in our own way and we all have a story to tell. I have spent over 10+ years trying to find ways to be more creative for myself and lately I have discovered that it’s not for me, I want to be more creative because I can help others in more ways when I amand I offer more to my clients!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that money is not everything! Coming from a traditional Mexican home, money used to mean everything for my family. But my parents had minimum wage jobs so money was hard to come by. That raised me with the mentality that money controls everything you do. What you eat, what you buy, how you act. And luckily my parents put me through college and I have a career they never had an opportunity to chase. With that being said I am a strong believer that if you put everything you have into something and really do it passionately money will follow. Of course you have to put in the work but energy is rewarded in this life wether you put it into something positive or negative is up to you. But now that I don’t let money control me I am free to live how I want to live and know that as long as I am true to myself life will continue to reward me in ways I may not understand.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding part of what I do is knowing how much other people value it. What I mean is, for example, when a food truck client spends all their money to open up a business to get their parents out of working full time and work in a food truck as a family for their own business. Thats huge! That’s such a big decision they made and they are paying me to brand their truck and business! That means so much to me! Especially when we are all delivered and I pay a visit to their establishment and see my designs everywhere. I see it on their clothes, their hats, their trailers. They wear it so proudly and that just makes me feel so rewarded in ways nothing else can. That’s worth everything, seeing people achieving and living out their dreams and I get to be part of it!
