We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Felipe Loureiro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Felipe, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
“I grew up in Brazil. I remember when I was 9 years old and my dad began training for triathlons. Two years later, at 11 years old, I followed in my dad’s footsteps and competed in my first triathlon…and since then, I’ve raced in over 600 triathlon races around the world, including 3 Ironmans. Triathlon is the reason I came to San Diego from Brazil 25 years ago. I knew San Diego could provide the perfect venue for both daily training and abundant racing opportunities. I was lucky enough to have found my passion when I was 11, and that passion of the triathlon sport has provided me with a fulfilling life of physical training, exciting racing, and the gratifying vocation of coaching others the joy of triathlon. I am looking forward to continuing my triathlon racing career for many years to come.”
Felipe, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My company Breakaway Training is a Multisport coaching service towards runners, cyclists, triathletes, adventure racers and swimmers. We work with all types of athletes ranging from the elite level endurance athlete, front to back-of-the-pack age groupers, or anyone who simply wants to finish a triathlon, marathon, or first 5k. We also provide Custom training programs tailored to the athlete lifestyle, work schedule, family and race goals. Breakaway Training is like a big family!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Loyalty is the principle that matters most to me because that is key to a successful coaching/athlete relationship. It is common in my industry for people to jump around and believe the grass is greener on the other side. If an athlete is loyal and sticks it out with me, the connection deepens over time and I can bring out the best in them.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My career and business took a long time to get smooth, when I first moved to San Diego in 1998 in search of a professional athlete career, I found myself working part-time in coffee shops or delivering pizza. Was not until 2006 when I officially opened Breakaway Training that I was able to focus 100% on coaching my athletes and training towards my race goals. Made me appreciated even more my life and my work!
