Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Felipe Jorquera . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Felipe , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most significant project for me is the short film Preámbulo, this is a very important project for me because it is a short film that I wrote to break the mold and get rid of the stigma of “disability.” Being in a wheelchair has been a limitation not only for my life, but also for my professional career. Commonly, audiovisual filmmakers tend to only call me to play roles around my wheelchair, which has been very difficult for me. It is difficult to explain to other people that I have an ordinary life, that despite my wheelchair I have a wife and a son. I am a neighbor, a son, a friend, a brother, an uncle, a cousin and many other things, I am not just a wheelchair.
In the short film Preámbulo I was able to play a rol out of my wheelchair, crawling through the earth in a totally macabre setting, demonstrating that one can go far beyond disability and also far beyond what is obviously visible in the films and in life itself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Felipe Jorquera, I am 31 years old; I am the first professional Actor with a “disability” from my native country (Chile) When I decided to study acting, many people did not agree with that, they told me that a person in a wheelchair could not be a professional actor because “I couldn’t move”, others told me that this was ridiculous because I could only aspire. to play acting roles. “sick people”, and the universities closed their doors to me telling me the same arguments.
My search and perseverance went so far and against all adversity that I managed to enter the “Matus Actores” acting academy, the leading film and television acting academy in Chile. That allowed me to enter directly into the artistic circle forever.
At Matus Actores I learned my acting career in a very real, human and transparent way; At this academy I was also able to meet Gastón Salgado, a prominent Chilean actor, who was my teacher and has been my acting mentor to this day. Later I continued developing and participating in different projects within film, theater and television.
That led me to become an acting teacher and I was also officially accepted by ChileActors (Chile’s most important artists’ organization).
In search of making a project and a role beyond disability, I wrote the short film Preámbulo (which recently premiered this past October 15) with Arlen Pérez, a great Chilean filmmaker, who helped me make this project and some others (Short Film Sobremesa) these works are available on YouTube and are subtitled in English. The Chilean filmmaker Andrés Abrigo also cooperated and helped in the making of the short film Preámbulo.
I currently live in Utah since 2019.
I had the honor of participating in the movie Power Rangers Origins by American filmmaker Rob Diamond.
I feel very happy and proud to have reached this point in my life and my professional career.
I can testify that anything is possible if you put your mind to it, never stop believing in yourself.
I invite you to watch the Preamble Short Film that is available on YouTube. It is a project that breaks all schemes and goes far beyond the obvious. People’s appearance does not necessarily always coincide with their behavior.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Consume much more art, so that much more work can be generated for us artists and so that the rest of the people can learn about culture and also open their minds towards diversity and acceptance for themselves and for others; I think that Utah and this world in general would be much better if everyone stopped worrying about insignificant things like appearance, the other’s nationality or the skin color of the other, and if we all cared more about helping others and feeding ourselves things beautiful like love, art and the union of humanity.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist is being profound, it is feeling in your mind and in every pore of your body every work you create and interpret, through art you can know yourself and know others, because by being an artist you eliminate all prejudice that could block the learning in the present. Art allows you to show what simple words cannot say.
Art allows you to bare your soul and go far beyond what is obvious and even what exists.
Art allows you to respect and also teaches you to understand.
Art is recorded forever.
