I received my first paid client while attending cosmetology school here in San Antonio, Texas. My first client was a friend I had met through my husband while he was in the Air Force stationed in Spokane, Washington. She was getting married in Moscow, Idaho, and had seen the practice work I was posting on my Facebook page. Initially, I was supposed to be a guest at her wedding, but she and her mother-in-law decided to fly me out to Idaho to do hair and makeup for the bride, three bridesmaids, and one flower girl.
I was extremely nervous because I had only been in cosmetology school for seven months and felt nowhere near ready to take on such a task. Adding to my nerves, my friend and her bridal party were all Caucasian, while I am African American. In cosmetology school, you have your instructors as training wheels to help correct your mistakes. This time, I was officially riding on my own.
My friend and her bridal party were incredibly encouraging and trusted that I would do a great job. Despite my anxiety, I dove in and completed the job. To my immense relief and joy, everyone loved their look. This experience was both exhilarating and a huge confidence booster. It showed me that with trust, support, and a bit of courage, I could turn my passion into a profession. That first client experience was the beginning of my journey in making brides feel beautiful on their special day.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has undoubtedly been Google. Thanks to the power of search engine optimization and positive reviews, many brides and event-goers find their way to Felicity Buie Makeup Artistry through Google searches. Additionally, the multiple Facebook groups I’m part of have been instrumental in connecting me with new clients. These groups, dedicated to matching clients with hair stylists, makeup artists, and other essential vendors, have been a fantastic resource.
Other valuable sources include The Knot, Wedding Wire, and Instagram, where we showcase our work and engage with a wider audience. However, according to my website’s analytics, Google remains the number one source for attracting new clients. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how our online presence has grown and continues to draw in those looking for exceptional makeup artistry.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Keeping in touch with clients and fostering brand loyalty is a cornerstone of my business at Felicity Buie Makeup Artistry. One of the ways I ensure my clients feel valued is through a reward system. My clients earn points for each service they receive, and when they reach 20 points, they enjoy a $10 discount on their next service. This not only encourages repeat business but also shows my clients how much I appreciate their continued support.
I also understand the importance of maintaining a delicate balance when it comes to communication. While staying in touch is crucial, I’m mindful not to overwhelm my clients with too many marketing emails. Instead, I focus on sending thoughtful, timely updates and offers that are genuinely beneficial. Whether it’s a seasonal promotion, a sneak peek at new services, or a heartfelt holiday greeting, my goal is to ensure every communication feels personal and relevant.
