We recently connected with Felicia Rials and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Felicia , thanks for joining us today. Can you share a story with us from back when you were an intern or apprentice? Maybe it’s a story that illustrates an important lesson you learned or maybe it’s a just a story that makes you laugh (or cry)? Looking back at internships and apprenticeships can be interesting, because there is so much variety in people’s experiences – and often those experiences inform our own leadership style.
Today, in the beauty industry people are so quick to jump in to this business with no experience. You don’t learn much in school just the basics. After cosmo school I moved to Los Angeles to assist celerity hairstylist Michael Sparks. It was the best yet scariest decision I’ve ever made, but no 7 years later it was the best decision I have ever made. Michael became one of my best friends, and literally everything he taught me is how I do business today. He was hard on me, but I always told him I was that one assistant that would take away 98% of the technique and everything he taught me. It is so important to assist after school and I cannot stress it enough. Relationships are key in the industry and it’s a way to catapult you. You don’t just take away how to do hair, it can change you as a person and how to run a business!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The thing that sets me apart is that I don’t want to be part of the norm. I keep it as real as real can get. I don’t feed into the social media editing and all that. I carry product and use tools that I can stand behind and that actually work, I won’t just sell you a product to make a buck!
Also, since coming back to az I am at a higher price point, but it’s also Called work smarter not harder! I would rather give each client my undivided attention and make sure their hair is my number 1 priority then double or triple booking myself!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When Covid hit, la was shut down completely and we decided to move back to az! I build a full business with no clients and dove right in. I’m a hustler!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Originally, I had 15,000 followers and my social media got hacked and I lost it all. And it really made me realize that the amount of followers you have doesn’t matter! And now I have built a following (not as big but growing) or real Loyal followers and people who actually engage!
