We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Felicia Cripe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Felicia below.
Felicia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
Do I wish I could have started my creative career sooner? The answer to this question is no. There was a time in my life when raising my daughter, finishing school, and navigating a new relationship took precedence over everything going on in my life. Had I not made those things a priority in my life. I would not have been able to create the solid foundation my family deserves. I also would not have grown into the individual I ultimately became had I not taken to work through the trials and tribulations. My decision to become a business owner presented itself to me during a time in my life when I was preparing to close one chapter of my life to start a new one. I had not planned on owning my own business; it just happened. My daughter had been suffering from eczema and other skin conditions for the longest time. Purchasing every cream and eczema-friendly soap available for nothing to work, I decided I had to do something to help her. So I did. I learned how to make soap and formulated a bar of soap that would help with her sensitive skin needs. Fast forward to October 2021, I turned soap-making into a business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Felicia; I am the owner and soap maker behind Simple Is Better Soap; an all natural hand-crafated soap company that keeps those with scentive skin in mind. I started my business unknowingly when I decided to solve a problem that I was having in my own home. The problem was that alot of the soaps and creams I was buying for my daughter seemed to cause her ezsema to flare up. The solution to my problem was to create a soap that my daughter could use on her skin. Then began to think about ways I could help others. Which casued me to produce soap made the high quality ingredience; the best part is that customers to know exactly the product they are putting on their skin.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One moment in my career where I demonstrated resilience was in the first few months of selling my soaps. I had no experience when it came to selling my product and did not know where to begin when it came to venues to attend. I remember paying for random events to get exposure. The hard lesson I learned from this was not only was I throwing my own money away but that I was throwing any profit I had made too by not researching the events I was attending. For months I felt defeated because my soaps were not selling how I thought they would. The problem was not that people did not want my soaps but that I chose events that my customers just weren’t attending. So I began to think about the types of individuals who would buy my product. Where would these people be? I also took note of the events I signed up for and the amount of traffic the board projected to have. Once I started to think about my customer and their needs. I then started to find my niche in the marketing world and started selling my soaps to those who needed them instead of showing up to an event hoping to find my target customer.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The advice I would give to anyone who is trying to build up their social media presence would be to stay consistent in posting. The more you post the more likely you are to be seen by others. Also, remain authenic in the mateiral you are posting. Follwers want to get to know you so the more they know about you and what you stand for the more likely they are willing to stand behind you are your cause.
