Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Feiran Wang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Feiran thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I sometimes think about this question. Until recently I’ve been involved with art only sporadically, in a random, accidental manner; for example, I remember watching my grandpa’s brother doing Chinese brush painting when he visited my grandparents during summer break; I was a little kid and I remembered I had enjoyed watching him painting the plum blossom. I never went to art school or systematically studied art. I only started to be a professional artist a few years back, after I graduated from master’s architecture. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I studied art when I was a kid or if I went to art school instead of architecture. I don’t know what would happen, maybe I would become an artist that I hate to be, maybe I wouldn’t make mutated chicken art at all, maybe I would paint paintings with brushes, maybe I would have met a mediocre teacher that tells me what art should be and would be consequently limited in my imagination. At least I know right now that I am honest to myself and that I follow my feelings and my pure instinct to live the way I like to live, and to express freely my mind through visual art. The way it all turned out is the best for me. In either way, no point to wonder if would have I started sooner or later.
Feiran , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The ontological precursor of my obsession with Mutated Chicken was a three-leg mutated chicken, that lived in a backyard coop of my grandparents’ house; this fantastic experience is further linked with my early childhood, the happiest period of my life, of which’s memory I became a willing permanent prisoner; behind its walls I can be an eternal child, free to indefinitely obsess over mutated chicken and transcending those biochemical potentials into my art. A few years back, when I first started to be a professional artist, all I wanted to be was a painter and a sculptor; I started much later than most of other professional artists who go to art school or are being trained in art classes at a very young age; I did not plan to branch my career into more disciplines; but after I created the main mutated chicken image, I realized its potential applicability across many different artistic field. And so I founded Mutated Chicken ™(https://www.mutatedchicken.com/) in 2022 and Mutated Chicken is an art brand focusing on fine art, including limited edition art prints, small to medium size collectible toys, fashion designs printed with mutated chicken images, other artistic products and virtual programs of mutated chicken. I also founded a department -Mutated Chicken™ Metaverse(https://www.mutatedchickenmetaverse.com/), which it deals with digital assets of Mutated Chicken ™ aiming to explore possibilities between Mutated Chicken™ and newest computer science technology, robotic science, updated internet social and economic structure, to develop potential new art forms and methods in the 21st century. I would like mutated chicken to keep up with the contemporary technological and scientific environment; to me that is almost as important as its artistic aspect. Of course that is not done at the expense of visual artistic values; instead the integration of modern technology makes them stronger. There will be many adventures and uncertainties, which is something that I love.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Yes, absolutely, I think art contains the ability to connect not only art professionals, but also with non-creatives. Being straightforward visually is important in my art, I am not pursuing a very abstract approach, I like mutated chicken art to be simply spoken by itself, visually direct and absolutely honest. As a result, mutated chicken art is never difficult to understand what it is or what it is about. To achieve the honesty in visual result, it requires precision of the entire art making process and perfectionistic mindset, which involves more time and effort and passion and patience, mutated chicken paintings are done digitally with precision and accuracy, supported with various computer programs; mutated chicken art toys are designed in digital programs and 3D printed using 3D printers and multiple steps of visual production process after prints. Even though I always make mutated chickens, I tend to make new variations and different supporting role subjects as much as possible, to explore and expand my artistic experience.
Mutated Chicken fashion department focuses on combining multiple contemporary manufacturing printing techniques with mutated chicken artwork. We are also looking for collaborations in order to expand all of the departments to make art reachable to art enthusiasts, new generations, children, regular workers, business companies, and organizations …
Mutated Chicken products have to be standing on the ground and be accessible to all people; Everyone has the right to enjoy art and include art in their property, including my pet chicken MuCh; she is often curious about what I am making and observes me when I am working, and beaks at my sculptures, especially the stink eyes.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
When there is demand, there is supply. It is true. I am still a newbie in art, but at very very beginning of my art career, I had some negative experiences, like for example paying to get exhibited, and it happens all over the world. Many art galleries and organizations do so to make money from artists and the problem is not that they want to make money from artists but that they only want to get money while they don’t deliver the actual help and exposure that artists deserve. These specific art workers don’t appreciate art, they don’t care about artists/creative minds; they are supposed to work with artists to help their art becoming more accessible to more people or gain more exposure, but sadly in the art industry, some art workers are tumors;, they live by art but don’t appreciate art nor artists, they pulls down the level of the art industry and cause some young artists with weak personalities to start doubting themselves or giving up too easily. Me with an extra strong personality, can be manipulated by hardly anyone. I soon noticed this kind of negative atmosphere created by the tumors and I started to walk my own path and only work with people who actually believe in me and intend to help my career for the sake of good art. I think an artist’s fame, attention or recognition should be mainly measured by his or her artistic talent instead of gossip and other unrelated topics. Mozart stays in history because of the vivid music he created; Everyone knows Picasso because of his cubism.
