Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Federica Rizzo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Federica , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I started dancing at the age of 9 years old I felt that dance would have been a big part of my life. When I was 18 years old and I graduated in high school and I asked myself where you see yourself in this world? the answer was always the same: the image of me dancing. on stage.
I was already dancing professionally even if I was 18 years old my priority was training training and training. Then, few years later I started to teach in different dance studios . So without even try to do other things I was already dancing and working as a professional dancer.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Federica Rizzo, “Fede” for my American friends. I originally from Italy where I started my dance journey. In 2014 I decided to train in NYC. I attended the Broadway Dance Center where I graduated and where everything has started. I like to say that I am a creative. Last year I moved to the US from Italy I started to do so many new things like acting, modeling, not just dancing as I thought. Of course, I always introduce myself as a professional dancer and dance instructor. I’ve been training in different dance styles and I really love to dance every single dance style. As a dance teacher I am teaching contemporary, jazz funk, hip hop and Heels to adults of different levels. The priority during my classes is that my students have to have fun with dance first of all and than of course I love to see their improvements. About acting and modeling I just started with this new path of my life so I am just enjoying it! I have still a lot of work to do and I lot of things to learn about it.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Since I moved to the US from Italy I had to unlearn a lot things to be able to work here. I used to have a very limited mind on what I was capable to do as an artist. I grew up with a lot of limits for example when most of dance teachers used to tell me ” you can dance really good in just one dance style” and this was not true! A dancer can be excellent at more than one style. Or even the fact that here there is more freedom to be what you really are in both personal and artistic life. The fact that to be a versatile dancer or a versatile artist is not a limit but it is a huge plus for your career. So I learnt to open my mind to try to do new things even if I was scared that maybe I wasn’t good at it .
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think artists are very lucky because we can express our feelings through our art, so it’s a kind of meditation and psychological session where we can release trauma , bad or good emotions through our movement or though other forms of art. When I can express my feelings through my movements is really liberating for me. It’s because of dance that I was able to get through very difficult situations in my life. I had a big loss in my family when I was young and thanks to dance I’m here now to live my dream. Artists and creatives are strong and brave people who decided to live their life in a special and different way. We can transform moments that we live in the everyday life into art. Our biggest passions is also our job and when this happens it really fulfilled your life.
