We were lucky to catch up with Feather Flikkema recently and have shared our conversation below.
Feather, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Four years ago I decided to close my facial business, get pregnant and move to Hawaii with my family. I was 2 years into my marriage, 5 years together, and excited about life. Once I got pregnant, we sold everything we owned, hopped on a flight and made our way to Hawaii. Little did I know the Big Island of Hawaii would dissolve everything that I thought was solid in my life.
Soon after arriving in Hawaii things in my marriage began to fall apart. I was pregnant and emotional, the work situation for my husband wasn’t panning out as we had hoped. Things were slowly starting to get harder and harder. To keep a long story short over the next 4 years my marriage dissolved into mud. We were so stuck and after trying for months to share my truth I was left feeling unheard and unmet in my marriage.
Instead of just sitting back and settling for an unfulfilling life, I decided to take a huge risk and choose myself for the first time ever. The risk I took was one of deep self love and one that took a lot of courage. After months of contemplation about my family and the path I had chosen, my purpose, and my happiness, I decided to leave my husband and move back to California with my two sons, pursing the dream of having my own energy healing business.
It hasn’t’ been easy. Many tears have been shed while navigating the fear and doubt. But taking this risk was the best decision of my life. I’ve been slowing growing my business, trusting the process, continuing to step out of my comfort zone. I choose everyday to courageously step into the next unfolding of myself so that I may grow and show my boys that by following your heart and dreams you can create heaven on earth. Never settle for less than you know you deserve.
Feather, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Feather Rose Marie. Since my late teens to now at the age of 44, I have found myself completely enamored with the holistic healing arts. I was born a deeply spiritual person and through out my life have studied many different healing modalities including therapeutic massage, Reiki, integrative nutrition, the Tao Tantric Arts, Yoga, Qigong, somatic energetic healing and kundalini bodywork. It is a true honor and privilege to be a healer, teacher and guide of embodied holistic self cafe.
My true purpose is to reconnect humans to the multidimensional nature of their being. To know that they are so much more than they could ever truly comprehend. By learning to listen to the subtle cues of the body, how the nervous system works, and understanding our energetic anatomy, we can begin realize that true health is in our own hands. This empowerment changes everything and infuses the mundane with magic.
One of the biggest things I like to work with people on is their connection to their sexual energy. I feel this is truly the basis of who we are and of our overall health. Many of us are disconnected from the true nature of our being. When we begin to heal our relationship to our sexuality and bring it into harmony with the heart and the mind, we begin to see that the fountain of our sexual nature is actually the key to unlocking our vitality and wellbeing. The ways in which I work with this energy is through meditation, tantric and taoist energy healing breath practices, jade egg, self massage and kundalini bodywork.
I offer private 1:1 sessions, as well as group healings, and destination retreats. I truly believe that we all have the power to weave a healthy and empowered life.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
When it comes to energy healing and succeeding in this field I think it’s essential to truly trust yourself and believe in who you are. For anyone who feels called to be a healer you know in your bones that this is something you came here to do. But it can be hard for people to step into this sense of empowerment, especially if they are more empathic and tend to hold themselves back. I know many people who want to offer healing sessions but don’t do the personal development work to truly be able to hold the space.
You can take all the trainings, know everything about how to do a certain modality, but when it comes to this work no one is going to want to come see you or trust you if you don’t trust in yourself. I think this pertains to all business really, but in health care people need to trust the person they are seeing and that stems from the trust you hold for yourself.
Energy healing is also interesting because each of us hold a unique frequency and the way I do it is going to have a different flavor than when someone else does it. This is really cool because if you feel called, its your unique way of sharing the healing that is like no other. When we can realize this it takes the competition out of the field and opens space for everyone.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Absolutely! If I could go back I’d tell my younger self one thing. I would tell her to trust the pull of inspiration life offers and release the self doubt. Life is always gifting us opportunities to follow our dreams but we tend to hold back and question everything. This is sometimes good because we need to honor discernment, but it also inhibits us from answering the call most times. When we get too in our heads about whether we should or shouldn’t do something, or if we know enough or are good enough, we lose sight our true vision and most times follow the thread of conditioning we’ve received rather than the deep desire of our truth.
With that said, I do believe that everything I’ve been through and done in my life, has lead me to this point right now where I’m living my life’s purpose more fully than ever. So everything in essence is medicine.
I can honestly say I love what I do and do what I love. It feels really amazing.
