Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Fawn Dellit. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Fawn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
I often think about my first customer. Honestly, I always wonder WHY the heck they hired me, but I’m so glad they did. I started this company after having my first child and wanting a job where I could also stay home with her. We had just moved to Houston, so I knew no one. I had a ton of knowledge about flowers and weddings I just didn’t know how to get my name out into the world. We decided to invest in doing the Bridal Show. Mind you we didn’t have a ton of money to invest in the company at the time. We got the smallest booth they offered and bought what we thought was a ton of flowers. We showed up to the huge convention center and other florists had these HUGE booths and massive setups. Ours was the smallest floral set up in the whole show, but we had put a lot of thought into it and the design of it. It was there that we got our name out to our first client. We later met up for a consultation at a coffee shop (I didn’t have a studio space at the time) and she made the decision to trust me with her wedding flowers. From that same wedding show, I made relationships with planners and photographers that were more established and started to refer me.
Fawn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Fawn, owner of F. Dellit Designs. F. Dellit Designs is a floral studio that specializes in wedding and event design. I started my company in 2013 after moving from Denver, Colorado to the huge city of Houston, Texas. With a baby in my belly, I was at a crossroad in my life and knew I wanted a job that I could be home with my daughter. It was also a dream to have my own flower shop so it felt like the perfect time to start. I’m so proud of how much this little company has grown. Starting from nothing to where we are today. We have so much love for weddings and flowers and truly hope that shows up in every wedding we do.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
One thing we take pride in is being extremely organized. In this business, there are a lot of moving parts that all need to come together perfectly and quickly on the wedding day. There really isn’t much time for error. We have grown a reputation in the market for being super organized and officiant not only for the wedding set up, but the whole process from first meeting to breakdown at the end of the event. Even though we do over 70 weddings a year it’s important to us that each client feels like their event is the only one we have. Someone once told me ” it may be your 100th wedding as a business but it’s the client’s one and only wedding.”
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for us is vendor referal. It’s super important for us to grow and maintain our relationships with photographers, planners and venues. We often do things to go the extra mile, maybe toss in some free extra greenery or hang a neon sign for the planner – it’s the little things that help them out a lot, doesnt’ cost us much and they remember and appricate.
