We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Favour Akran a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Favour, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
The educational system should include more real life lessons. Especially about money management. Going into business means that I have to gain a better understanding of numbers and finances. Our educational system does not teach us anything about financial literacy. All students come out with new trades and skills but no clue as to how they should manage their money
Favour, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into my craft about 4 years ago when I decided to do my sister’s hair. I have 3 other sisters and then my mother so we are a house fulll of girls!! (sorry dad!) I provide hair braiding/ styling services but I am different from others because I solve the miniature issues that we have but never really think to bring up. I love to do creative styles on my client’s. Hairstyling is not just a service, but it’s also a craft and an art. When you’re the artist, you can really create whatever image you desire. It’s so beautiful how much depth and meaning our hair carries. I am proud of the love and the welcoming environment that I provide to my clients. I am not your average braider. I want all my clients to know that It’s more than just a service but also an experience and there is so much love and care that goes behind what I do. I love helping people embrace their inner confidence!
How did you build your audience on social media?
It took me a long while to build my presence on social media and I am still working on it. I have had that instagram page for about 4 years and sometimes I ask myself “Favour, why don’t you have 1M followers ?” But it doesn’t work like that!! And truly I am superrrr grateful for the following that I have acquired. Because if 3.7K people were standing in front of me, and I had to show them my work, I would be astounded by that amount of people. I built my social media by consistent posting, looking onto new trends and also capturing good content. I also reach out to others and network which helped me to gain followers. To those who are just starting to build their empire up, I would suggest patience for one. Because it takes a lot of time and patience to see major results and not everybody’s story is the same. Also consistency is mandatory!! You have to stay consistent and keep posting even if there are only 2 likes!!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think that my customer service helped to build my reputation. Along with a good product should be good customer service and professionalism especially in the hairstyling world. Yes, I style my clients very neatly and yes I can do creative styles but the effort and the treatment I try to maintain is what I feel like marks my difference.
