We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fatima Hendrix a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Fatima, appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Earning a full time living from my creative work is a daily reminder of how blessed I am . To bring forth a business that utilizes all my strongest suits, so that I can help others, is an incredible achievement.
I can not begin to tell you how many jobs I’ve had but if you’re close to me in my personal life you know. (IYKYK!) Every time I spoke to someone I always had a new opportunity, or the next big way for me to really feel like I was valued and serving people to my fullest potential. There was one thing that was for sure and that is that I’ve freelanced for years before I sat down and took my skills and myself, truly seriously.

Fatima, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
From a graphic artist in high school, brand ambassador, model, to traveling event manager I felt like the flexibility and travel was great. Still there was a voice that told me, “aim higher.” When the pandemic hit and my 1099 position fell through, like a lot of people we all woke up to the idea of working from WiFi. Meanwhile, the greater San Antonio’s heartbeat had slowed down to a lethargic beat, slow and sad as businesses closed. With google maps not being an accurate way of knowing – who’s open, who’s closed, who can deliver food- I took to social media. I helped small food trucks, businesses, and bars get the word out on socials about how they were still there – thumping with life and ready to serve San Antonio. You see, this city has a deep culture that is fueled by the food, the people, the nightlife, the drinks and the memories we create. I wanted to forever capture, and to also help facilitate life back to a dying food and drink industry. Much like myself, they too had their dreams/careers put on hold when a worldwide shutdown took place. Hendrix Marketing & Productions was born, and ever since then I’ve had my fingers on the pulse of the city.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Hendrix Marketing & Productions has put on events for small businesses to help create that community feeling. I’m very happy to introduce guests to new areas, and locations throughout my city of San Antonio and extending to Austin. Texans hone in on a sense of that hospitality, and I intend to carry that though with my events. I’ve always said what sets Hendrix Marketing & Productions apart is the empathy that is exercised from first meeting, to photo shoots, to celebrating milestones with clients. My business operates with a lot of heart, and it is seen in my work. Showcasing what makes these businesses unique is my specialty and we always create content that is authentic to their brand. I’m not here to create smoke and mirrors, this is my gift to create content for passionate business owners and service providers.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Honestly just the whole starting process of having a business was difficult. I felt like the resources to getting started where all over the place so I took to the internet and just made a list. Thankfully with digital products I have some of these resources altogether in my shopify store. Some free ebooks are also available because I think its important to provide value, if you’re blessed with that know how!
