Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Fatell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Fatell, appreciate you joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Following a creative career path hasn’t been the easiest road. I started my creative journey at 15 years old where I began blindly pursuing a life where I would be living my dreams and making a living on what I love to do. After overcoming many years of struggle, I developed a I will not lose mentality. That is what has carried me on to where I stand today. I have currently worked with industry professionals such as Gangsta Boo from Three 6 Mafia, The Outlawz, Tupac Shakur’s group, Will Gittens, Chino XL, Ras Kass, Salma Slimz & 24 Hrs, just to name a few.
Fatell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Los Angeles hip-hop artist and radio personality on syndicated FM program (After Party Radio Show). I am an uplifting performer with a positive vibe, high energy and “can’t miss” smile.
Lancaster, California is where I began my radio hosting career as the face for the Antelope Valley’s Kaliente Show 100.9 FM KRAJ (The Heat)
I am in partnership with Willie Norwood, Sr. (Brandy, Ray J) and have a distribution deal with Multi platinum record producer Donald XL Robertson (XLP Distribution / Downtown) for his own record label, Fatell Music.
I was named Socially Conscience Artist of the Year (2015) by Power 106 FM and KHCIA Foundation (Kindhearted Compassion In Action). I have written over 250 songs and have almost 20 music videos.
I was brought into this world by an alcoholic father with a drug addiction and a mother trapped in the middle of his downfall.
When my father got clean, it provided a sense of normalcy. Growing up, I was the class clown always getting attention with my jokes. I was inspired by the lyrics and message of Notorious B.I.G, which motivated me to begin studying hip-hop greats, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Rakim, Eminem, Big Daddy Kane, etc. As I was learning the craft I would battle against other local MC’s. In this negative world, I created feel good music packed with substance.
Some of my career highlights include performing on ESPN and at a Los Angeles Clippers Game.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In my early 20’s I created a song called Plankin’ during it’s heightened phenomenon. One day shortly after releasing the song I was in a parking lot in Hollywood playing the record in the car when a record executive nearby overheard the song and sparked interest. Soon after, my group signed and solidified a record deal. Not knowing the full ins and outs of the industry or business practices the record deal soon revealed that it was not in our best interest. Determined to overcome every obstacle in my path, I kept creating music and growing my network to position myself to win big on my own terms.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The driving force behind my creative journey has always been to be a positive motivation for those who are struggling and to bridge the gap between cultures through my music & diverse sound.
