Hi Faryn, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?

I’m very happy with making the step to become a business owner. To have that boss mentality and get that drive to start your own business. Working for someone else was not something I wanted to do, but I had to do it. And I did it for money. All the wrong reasons because I was unhappy. Unhappy with the fact that working for someone else, I am making their dreams come true and not my own. I’m missing out on the opportunity to build something from the ground up and break the generational barrier of working the typical “9-5” job. I have bigger goals and aspirations for myself. I want a certain lifestyle for me and my family. I use to work for a popular cannabis company and waking up everyday dreading the fact that I’m working for someone else and just very unhappy. Someone also once told me “if you wake up 5 days in a row , unhappy at what you’re doing, you have to change the narrative.” And ever since then I’ve went by that and I proceeded to change my narrative. Wanting to leave my children behind something that they can grow into and give them the inspiration to go for you dreams. Stick to what you like and essentially love and really go for it. Don’t succumb to the norm of having a “9-5” just for money and to get by. No do something that is greater ! Be great! Don’t be regular, and not to say having a 9-5 is regular because we need people to have those jobs we need these things. But also, don’t think that that is the only option being in a society that’s afraid sometimes to take that leap into the unknown.

Faryn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I started my business during pandemic. Pandemic is what truly changed things for me and gave me that push I needed. I began taking lash courses and got 2x Certified as an eyelash technician in March 2020. I took the time to perfect my craft and went full throttle into launching Winxx By Fay LLC in August 2020. 2 years later in 2022, I decided to challenge myself and take a microblading course for eyebrows. I haven’t really did much with that but I wanted the knowledge and I learned a lot. I also learned that for my clientele they think of “tattooing” they don’t want something so permanent so my next venture is to start Henna and Ombré which is henna ink based and not tattoo based where it’ll fade in 4-6 week and you come back for touch ups in between to get a fill-in as you would lashes. But going back to Winxx By Fay, I offer eyelash services and take-off services. I also have a Vegan NON-GMO lash wash kit which includes tear free wash, an eye brush also a mascara wand. I look forward to providing my clients with the best up keep for their lashes. Clean lashes last longer ladies ! Remember that, treat your lashes as you would your face. Helps great with retention which will make the lashes last much longer.

Now, what are eyelash extensions you may ask? Eyelash extensions are the extension of your natural lashes, there are many different curls and lengths that are available. You have C curl which is more natural and you have D curl which are the top two curls lash techs typically use. Now there are other curls like B, L, J, CC and DD curls depending on the type of curl or look you’re going for. So with that being said I add to the natural beauty clients already have. A lot of my clients are natural girls, and we love natural face with just lash and some gloss , it can go a long way. Having the luxury to be able to wake up , wash your face brush your lashes do your hair and we’re out the house. I say luxury heavily because lash services are a luxury. As getting your hair done, that’s also a luxury. And the time and effort your stylists or lash tech spends on just one client you have to be compensated as such. For both your WORK and Worth! As well as your time. A lash set typically takes anywhere between for a full set an hour and a half to two hours. On average. There are some that take much longer and much less but that depends on your lash technician. A fill-in is when a full set is weeks old and you still have at least 40% of your original set left. Now anything less I do instruct my clients to get a full set. I work with two types of lash glues, one is high fume and it’s the most common of lashes, and the other is a low fume glue for my sensitive eye people. So I do accommodate according to my clients preference and if they say they have sensitive eyes. I try to accommodate all of my clients , returning and new to the best of my ability.
What sets me apart from others is my customer service. It is my willingness to satisfy everyone , although it’s not always affective but 98% of the time you will satisfy the right clientele. I’ve had my challenges just like any other business. You just have to remain professional , and those who will continue to come back they do, they are what keeps the business going. One monkey don’t stop no show, and I say that with so much humility. You can’t satisfy everyone but I always keep my composure and be sure that I treat them with the utmost respect. Being a boss you have to be the manager, the owner , and the employee. When you’re self employed and self paid. This is how I make my living and I haven’t stopped living since.
I am most proud of my accomplishments thus far in my business, I have more to grow and to learn I wish to add more services in this trillions dollar industry. Beauty is a whole spectrum and I love to see women feeling their best and confident in themselves. I plan to expand, further into the industry with prod using facials, waxes, henna ombré brows and so much more than just eye lashes.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.

Before going full throttle into my business, I was once an employee. I had to get the money to take the classes and get the education to become a lash technician. I had no loans no handouts just me and my 9-5 paychecks. I would go to work from 9-5 and come home and only have my lash books limited to only after 5pm clients. I realized by doing so I was minimizing myself. I gave my clients minimal attention to where they could only book after a certain time and certain days. I didn’t give them the option to be seen sooner or I wasn’t available when their schedule allowed. I missed out on many opportunities working for someone else’s dream while I had mine on the back burner. After a while I did go back and forth between 9-5 jobs and lashing until I came to the conclusion I wanted to change my narrative completely and go back to being a lash technician full time. I had to think about more pouring into myself and my dreams. As an entrepreneur you go through the trials of wanting to give up or your slow peaks when business isn’t booming how you want, but I had to realize you will be tested and these are tests you have to pass. This too shall pass. You will elevate so don’t give up. Once God gives you a dream you have that dream for a reason. I use to bring in 2 clients a week sometimes 1, I average now, 4-8 clients a week and sometimes even more and it’ll continue to grow. I will continue to elevate. So keep pushing and don’t give up, add to your craft, add services, add products. Just keep adding and obtaining the knowledge to be greater than you’ve ever expected.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

Word of mouth and referrals have been my best source of getting new clientele. Also having instagram and using those hashtags to my best advantage. Reels have also been getting seen so take that advantage as well. You want the most traffic to your page because you can have over a thousand visits and at least 20-40% of those viewers they are booking those appointments. You just want your work seen all it take sis a hashtag on social media. Also having the best customer service even if it’s you just running your instagram, you will display perfect customer service so that those new clients will continue to come back. And they will also tell their friends who will tell their friends.
