We recently connected with Farryn Dickson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Farryn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My first was actually a wedding. I was referred to the couple by their wedding planner. I was hired to do their garland for their ceremony arch. This was my first ever solo wedding gig. I was so nervous but I did it and it came out great. And the couple absolutely loved it.
Farryn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
HNY Blzm came about because I was feeling like I needed a creative outlet and I wasn’t getting that from my 9-5 job at the time. I kept asking for it but was never given the opportunity, so I stopped asking and decided to just make that avenue for myself. I started by making arrangements for my coworkers, like if they had a birthday in the family or just wanted to get someone special something. Originally floral design was something I kinda fell into, and I ended up really liking it. Now almost 10 years later, I have two weekly clients I deliver to in the DTLA area, and have hosted my own floral workshop, I have done holiday dinners, birthday parties, baby showers, engagements, and engagement parties and a wedding!!! All your floral needs I can do it.
What I want followers to know about me and my work is that I am self taught, and try not to follow the generic flower arrangement formulas. I like to think of my work as art, so no two HNY Blzm arrangements look alike there’s a bit of variety in every delivery. Which I think is how it should be, that’s the whole beauty of flowers each one is unique.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes this was my side hustle and I had a regular job that I was trying to move up in, but it wasn’t going well. I wanted something more creative and one day I just made a logo (on company time lol). From there it went to making arrangements for coworkers. And then I decided to quit my job and give myself a shot to be creative, and also spend more time with my family. I remember calling my boss at the time to tell her that I wanted to put in my 2 week notice. I was so nervous but she was so supportive and ended up being my first weekly delivery client. Now I arrange and deliver 14 floral arrangements to that showroom every Monday morning. It meant the world to me that she would still support me even though I decided to leave the company.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time I had to pivot had to be when I decided to quit my job. I had been working in that field for 11 years. And at that specific company for 8 years. I had dedicated so much time to it but I was getting to a point where mentally I was so frustrated. And I noticed myself taking it out on my family. Being short and grumpy all the time, it didn’t feel good inside of me anymore. I expressed my frustrations but it always seemed like a “bad time” for the company. The pandemic, then an acquisition, and layoffs all over again. I had a conversation with my husband and we both agreed that it was worth a shot to if this could better our family dynamic and most importantly my mental health.
