We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Farrah Hodgson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Farrah, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
In 2011 I had a tumor on my spine, I found out after I was pregnant with my youngest daughter, child #5. The Pain was unbearable to the point where as a single mother, I couldn’t take care of my kids. So I had to do surgery, but while I was in surgery they hit a motor nerve and I became paralyzed from the waist down for a couple of years. While in that season, I surrendered to God and gained a relationship with him. I needed his supernatural strength, HE BECAME MY HEALER AND DELIVER. He then revealed to me my Purpose, which was to become a published author, then that opened the door to so many platforms of Prosperity. I knew it was only GOD because I was a high school dropout, a burlesque entertainer- a “SHOW GIRL” and I had a long history of loving the wrong men that distracted me from who GOD created me to be. With all that action-packed dramatic life, I didn’t like reading books. But I know now those crazy things were all for a purpose. Those things gave me content for all my books. I pushed past my comfort zone and took a leap of faith in 2016 and went into full-time ministry and then became a published author of six books. I am now the CEO OF DAUGHTER OF THE KING PUBLISHING. I am so passionate about people sharing their testimonies because when I decided to put my pain to paper, it gave me hope and transformed my life for the better. Our mission at Daughter of the King Publishing is to empower and support aspiring authors in sharing their stories and for them to reach a wider audience. What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Work hard, play harder!
The hallmark of a meaningful life is not just in the pleasurable moments we share with the world; it is in the fulfilment of the purpose we are created for and our contribution to humankind in our given capacity.
Yes, God wants us to enjoy life and enjoy it to the fullest (John 10:10), but not at the expense of our divine purpose or calling.
Life is a mixture of pleasure and pain, and the ultimate goal of life is not just living for pleasure. Human desire is insatiable, but anyone who will rise to greatness and fulfill God’s purpose for their life must carefully curate their options and discipline their appetite. Everything that can bring pleasure also has an inherent power to bring about damage and downfall. Every “Superman” has their kryptonite; wisdom demands that they don’t play around it.
As we enjoy the fullness of life God has given to us, the question is, how far is too far? It is when our godly standard is compromised. When our morals, integrity, ethics, and values become questionable in the name of pleasure, that is too far.
Our purpose becomes endangered and is at risk when pleasures become the ultimate goal or the driver of our life. Everything good must be enjoyed moderately.
Transitioning from a career as a burlesque entertainer to becoming a business owner posed a significant challenge for me. In the world of entertainment, where I thrived as a dancer, the glitz and glamour of networking, dressing up, and living a high-maintenance lifestyle were the norm. It was a life that fed my passion and provided a sustainable income. However, as I ventured into entrepreneurship and self-employment, I encountered the need for a shift in mindset towards time and money management.
The transition required me to acquire new skills and knowledge through courses, educational programs, and seminars in the publishing industry. This learning process proved to be overwhelming at times, leading to a temporary loss of passion for my entrepreneurial pursuits. I had to navigate through the challenges of managing finances and time effectively, all while staying true to my God-given purpose.
Despite the setbacks and hardships, I remained resilient and committed to prioritizing the growth of my business. It was during these trying times that I discovered a newfound sense of fulfillment in helping others overcome their struggles and obstacles. Witnessing the positive impact I could make on people’s lives fueled my sense of purpose and inspired me to emerge as a leader in my field.
As I embraced my role as a positive influencer, I found joy and satisfaction in using my experiences and expertise to guide and support others on their journeys. Through perseverance and a renewed focus on my entrepreneurial goals, I not only overcame my initial struggles but also found a deeper sense of fulfillment in making a difference in the lives of those around me and even better the whole world!
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
During the transition from my previous career as a burlesque entertainer to my new role as a Mompreneur, I found myself in need of additional income to support my entrepreneurial endeavors. To meet this need, I took on a job driving for Uber, working a traditional 9-to-5 schedule. Surprisingly, this experience proved to be quite beneficial, as it not only provided me with a steady source of income but also allowed me to connect with a diverse range of people.
As an Uber driver, I took advantage of the opportunity to promote and sell my own books, which I had published and made available on platforms like Amazon. I began carrying copies of my books in my car, allowing me to engage with passengers who showed interest in my work. It was during this time that I came to understand the power of building genuine connections with others, as the quote “You can close more business in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get people interested in you” resonated with me.
Networking played a crucial role in my journey as a Mompreneur, as it not only facilitated professional relationships but also opened doors to new opportunities and ideas. Through networking, I had the chance to meet an exceptional individual who would later become a key asset to my business. In 2018, I crossed paths with a talented administrator who I eventually hired to handle administrative tasks for my company, Daughter of the King Publishing. This remarkable individual has since become an invaluable part of my team, serving as the backbone of my business and contributing significantly to its success.
The power of networking and building meaningful connections cannot be overstated. In my experience, investing time and effort in networking proved to be a worthwhile endeavor that led to the discovery of a valuable team member who continues to play a pivotal role in the growth and success of my business.
