Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Faris M. El Borno (GAZA). We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Faris M., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Being Palenstinian, I’ve never felt at “home” anywhere – constantly moving around and changing locations during my upbringing. The meaning behind Nomadic is that by being a “nomad”, you’re able to be anywhere at any time doing what makes you feel content and free. Our mission is to ensure that the talent comes first by prioritizing the integrity of the art while simultaneously optimizing commercial success.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
During my time in school at the University of Miami, I was studying Industrial Engineering, but that wasn’t where my passion was. I knew I wanted to be in the music industry, but was aware that I couldn’t make the music myself. Being a student, I saved enough money to build a home studio and record local artists. This led to trying to manage an artist and friend of mine, which first planted the seed as the area of interest, however, the situation didn’t work out. Later down the line, one day I was approached by an artist by the name of Woffgang while waiting in a Dunkin’ Donuts line. The casual conversation led to him asking what I did for a living. I could have said I was an engineering student, but I decided to say that I was an artist manager despite not having any artists at the time. That moment solidified my passion. I eventually went on to begin acquiring a roster of my own talent and worked for another company – meeting business partners and building my network along the way. In 2020, after gaining success with my management career, I officially launched Nomadic. The road hasn’t been easy as there have been times where I’ve slept on couches and had to sell things in order to be able to chase my dream, but I continue to persevere with the faith that I will reach it.
Nomadic does everything from A-Z and beyond. This consists of things that would be considered outside of the traditional role of a label/management company. This includes music production, design, publishing and more. Currently, being a team of just my business partner Ryan and I, we work around the clock to service our roster and clients.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The first thing I’d say was getting out of my comfort zone. Due to the fact that I originally did not have the network or formal education that many would have in this industry, I had to go the extra mile to get my name out there. I’ve attended multiple events and reached out to many entities where the situation was basically me going out on a limb on if it would amount to anything. I took every single opportunity that was presented to me – which often appears by being at the right place at the right time.
Next, is how I carry myself. When engaging in situations, I make sure that what I present holds value by it coming from a place of knowledge, integrity, and confidence. I know that my actions not only reflect myself, but also my brand and team.
Any advice for managing a team?
The advice I would give is to ensure that your team knows that their input is valued and considered. They should feel as though they are a member of the team because they want to be, and not because they have to be. We treat business as “just a piece of paper” in a sense that we don’t force anyone to remain in situations where they are not satisfied, as that would not be beneficial for anyone. Thankfully, we haven’t encountered that predicament so far, but I have been a member of previous companies where morale was low due to the team not feeling appreciated, which caused the business to suffer as a result
Currently, we’re a team of two consisting of my partner Ryan and I – managing six active clients. We treat our clients and roster as people FIRST – placing priority on them as people and individuals, as opposed to just viewing them as investments. Our management style is to provide a service to roster/clients that will be unique to their situation. This instills in them the assurance that they are being understood.
