We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Fan Fang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Fan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is the recent partnership between Endless Health and the Black Heart Association, aimed at addressing heart health disparities within the Black community. As the product designer, I developed an accessible digital platform for the Guard Your Heart Tour, which includes events, screenings, and educational sessions. This project was particularly significant due to the necessity of creating a culturally sensitive, user-friendly interface based on extensive user research and collaboration with community leaders. Despite challenges in ensuring the platform’s robustness and intuitiveness, the overwhelmingly positive feedback highlighted the platform’s impact on improving heart health understanding and management within the community. This experience deepened my commitment to designing inclusive healthcare solutions and demonstrated the tangible difference thoughtful design can make in people’s lives.

Fan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Fan Fang, a product designer born and raised in Beijing, China, now residing in Jersey City. My journey in design began as an indie game designer, where I discovered my passion for creating engaging and thoughtful experiences that solve real problems. This passion led me to pivot towards product design, with a focus on behavior-forming spaces and inclusive design. I’ve explored projects across various industries, including healthcare, education, and gaming, each time striving to enhance user experiences through innovative solutions.
Currently, I’m delving into the health tech space at Endless Health, aiming to make heart health tests more accessible. My work extends beyond traditional product design; I’ve had the opportunity to work with individuals with disabilities, including at Logitech with autistic students and thesis work on gaming accessibility for blind players. These experiences have honed my ability to reimagine product flows from end to end and emphasize the importance of inclusive design. What sets me apart is my ability to redefine product experiences through an innovative lens, leveraging my storytelling skills to present novel ideas to stakeholders and gain their support for groundbreaking projects. I am deeply committed to designing thoughtful, impactful solutions that prioritize accessibility and user experience.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One pivotal moment in my career was when I transitioned from being an indie game designer to focusing on product design, specifically within the healthcare sector. Initially, my passion was in creating engaging and innovative games that challenged the boundaries between virtual and real-world experiences. However, I began to realize that my skills and creativity could be applied to design solutions that directly benefit people’s lives. I still love creating immersive experience, but I found that making it out of 9-5 is what works the best for me.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Observing users engage with a product can be a nerve-wracking experience because you have no control over how people think they should interact with it, and often, their interactions can surprise everyone! Despite this, I still love to see if the product I designed helps make their lives easier. It’s the most rewarding aspect of being a designer
