We recently connected with Faithima Wright and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Faithima, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve always loved drawing fancy costumes as a child. I remember venturing off into the clothing section in Department stores to put outfits together. My favorite characters were Lena Horne as Glenda the Good Witch (“The Wiz”) and Cruella De Vill played by Glenn Close (“101 Dalmatians”). Watching their extravagant costume design inspired me to pursue fashion. I eventually attended school for Fashion merchandising as an aspiring celebrity fashion stylist. My first job out of college in the industry was working as a Costume PA on the hit tv series Empire. Seeing the characters come to life on set for the first time I realized my true dream career.
Faithima, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a freelance costume designer and I.A.S.T.E 705 Motion Picture Costumer. I specialize in Afro futuristic and period style costume design. Conducting research on different visuals to build costume boards is a process I enjoy. My keen eye for extravagant accessories and bold colors brings the characters to life. My work as been featured overseas in Africa and Western Europe.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to never work a day in my life ever again. Costume designing and costuming feels like the ultimate game of dress up for me. I wish to leave the world a little more colorful, bold and uniquely beautiful.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Stepping outside of my comfort zone has pushed me to excel in my career. I took a risk while working in Chicago by relocated to California to increase my chances of joining the Union as a Costumer. Accepting that failures or undesirable outcomes can happen will give you the courage to keep trying and appreciate the journey. My time in Los Angeles has been very rewarding. I’m grateful for each win and every hardship I’ve faced along the way. I look forward to seeing my process in the future.
