Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Faith Winston. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Faith, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s go back in time a bit – can you share a story of a time when you learned an important lesson during your education?
During my college years, I discovered that achieving mastery in craftsmanship requires continuous practice. I dedicated countless hours to honing my sewing skills, enhancing my design abilities, and refining my creativity. Even to this day, I remain committed to learning and adopting new techniques. Furthermore, I recognized that craftsmanship demands a high degree of precision, patience, and a profound understanding of the craft. Sewing, depending on the project, can be quite meticulous and time-consuming. It’s important to note that fashion extends far beyond the glitz and glamour.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m someone who strongly believes in the power of pursuing your passion, regardless of the obstacles that may arise. My journey into the world of fashion began when I enrolled at the Academy of Art University to acquire the technical skills and knowledge of the fashion industry. It was a bold step for me, as I had very little experience in sewing at the time. I believed that formal education was essential to truly appreciate and innovate within this craft.
Upon graduating, my goal was to secure a fashion design job and start my career in the industry. However, the unforeseen challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted those plans. Despite my best efforts, I was rejected by multiple fashion design positions, and I eventually made the difficult decision to return to my hometown of Dallas.
It was during this period of uncertainty that I decided to channel my creativity into making one-of-a-kind bags. This marked the humble beginnings, as I delved into entrepreneurship, I had to teach myself the intricacies of fashion business.
In 2022, I was able to establish Ceres Monae, and it has been a journey of continuous growth and learning. Ceres Monae embodies a holistic approach to fashion, offering a range of products, including clothing, handbags, and candles. One of the hallmarks of the brand is the commitment to sustainability. The handbags are sourced from excess leather from manufacturers. This approach not only reduces waste but also adds a unique character to our products.
The handbag design is inspired by the twists and turns of life itself. The “Twist Bags” represent the idea that life is full of unexpected challenges and surprises. These designs serve as a reminder that our journeys are often filled with both highs and lows, and we must embrace them all.
What I am most proud of is the unwavering support from my family, friends, and even strangers who have encouraged and rallied behind Ceres Monae. It’s not just about me; it’s about building a community of individuals who appreciate the value of unique, handcrafted fashion.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
“Don’t Believe Everything You Think” by Thomas E. Kida: This book is an excellent choice for enhancing critical thinking skills and decision-making. Also, “Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business” by John Mackey and Raj Sisodia: This book offers a fresh perspective on capitalism and business management. It encourages a shift towards more ethical and sustainable business practices, a philosophy that resonates with those in management and entrepreneurship who value responsibility and positive impact.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the misconception that failure was inherently negative. Instead, I discovered that failure is a vital part of the learning and growth process, particularly as an fashion entrepreneur where the journey is filled with ups and downs. Building a successful business requires unwavering consistency and resilience.
