We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Faith Marlow a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Faith, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
It’s difficult to pick the most meaningful project because each have been wonderful experiences and learning opportunities. If I had to pick just one, I would have to say “Being Mrs. Dracula” because that is the story I started my career with. It is also the story I am most bonded with. I felt like the brides of Dracula had been largely underrepresented, so I took great pride and worked hard to be responsible and respectful to the source material- Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. Valeria and all the characters in “Being Mrs. Dracula” have been with me for over ten years and will always be very special to me.
Faith, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Faith, born and raised in East Tennessee. Currently, we live in historic Oak Ridge, the “Secret City”. My inspiration to write began when I was in the fifth grade with poetry but as I got older, my stories started to lean toward paranormal themed shorts. In 2012, I took the plunge and began to write professionally with my first published book, “Being Mrs. Dracula”. This combined my love of writing and fascination with vampires and monsters, which would foreshadow my future work.
When I’m not writing or working on something to do with writing, I’m probably watching a movie, most likely a horror movie. I am in love with all the classic Universal Monsters and stories revolving around female characters- heroes or villains. Thanks to quarantine, I have also been watching hours of YouTube videos and love watching clay sculpting and model scene making. I love the idea of creating things that are inspired by my stories, so maybe this will be a new endeavor in the future.
Having the opportunity to create stories that offer readers an escape is a gift that is not lost on me, especially now. Hearing that someone has enjoyed something I have written brings the most unique, humbling, joy. I hope to be able to share many more of my “Sweetly Twisted” stories for years to come.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Having an active social media presence it integral to any business. As a author, it allows me to interact with readers. I had worked for years building a following on my Facebook page but found that having a group is much more effective. We can discuss the books that I currently have available, updates on upcoming projects, and similar topics that are within the same genre as my books. With my group, I am able to be more than a name on the cover of a book and the readers are more than statistics on a sales report. We have created a spooky, weird little community that I am so proud of.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goals have changed over the years. I think starting out, every new author believes they will take the writing world by storm. And while I don’t intend to take the wind from anyone’s sails, I believe that if your main motivation for writing is to hit the big time with some sort of lucrative book deal, you might be in for a rude awakening. Writing is not the glamorous thing that you see in the movies. It is hard, often solitary work. The the thing that keeps me going is love. That is the most important thing I have learned in this journey. You must love the work. I may never quit my day job to be a full time author, but I’ve still been able to share my stories with people from all around the globe. I have touched people’s lives. Telling stories is one of humanity’s oldest joys. That is my goal now, to create the best stories that I can and to share them. I am the only person who can tell my stories, so I am going to focus on making them the best that I can. Everything else will fall into place.
