We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Faith Diaz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Faith , appreciate you joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.

You know, I love doing these interviews because it allows me time to stop and reflect on how far we’ve come as a small family owned business here in San Diego, Ca. I can recall a couple months before we opened on January 11th 2021, mid pandemic my husband and I sitting in our living room and me telling him I want to start a skin studio. I want to start my own business I don’t know how to form my own LLC, I don’t know how to really do much as far as the business side of things but I knew I was excellent at performing facials and making people feel like the best version of themselves. I’ve been practicing skincare for over 17 years and my passion for helping people overflows into my love for providing exceptional services that leave people wanting to come back for more. My husband was so supportive of me, despite the economic uncertainty and unrest COVID19 brought to everyone. He believed in me whole heartedly. Which is so important when starting a business having a support system that believes in you and your vision. Most new business owners do experience uncertain times when building a business. It’s so important to have someone by your side to cheer you on and support you despite set backs every business owner encounters.

I remember having a little under a thousand dollars in my bank account when opening our first location off La Jolla Blvd. I didn’t know how it all was going to work but I knew that there was a need for people feeling like the best version of themselves especially after such a tragic period that we all went through as a nation during covid19. I also knew exactly where I wanted to be located and I prayed and had faith that God would provide a place for LA JOLLA SKIN STUDIO if it was meant to be. The day I began looking for a space I found a little 250sq ft studio in Wind & Sea it was a stretch for what was in my bank account but I went for it. I said a prayer, signed the lease, and LA JOLLA SKIN STUDIO was born.

I furnished the studio with a bed that I had used when I started performing facials out of our kitchen, believe it or not. I offered free facials to grow my name and my reputation in the industry. Yes, out of my kitchen. I moved the bed into the 250sq ft apartment and started with travel sized products because I couldn’t afford retail size. My rule of thumb is if you want to start a business do it without getting yourself into debt. If you succeed, keep reinvesting and reinventing your brand through the profits you make. You know you have a good business Idea if the business is paying for it’s self and profitable from your customers contributions. Have a clear vision of what you want. That vision will consistently grow the more return you see on your investment. Be true to yourself and always do good by your community.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

Perfectionism, which is completely unobtainable. But quite frankly I had to learn how to not strive for perfection. Perfectionism can be a thief of joy, peace and experiencing and embracing every moment life brings. Being perfect is boring. Being imperfect is reality.

It’s through our imperfections that allow us to share our life hurts, hangups and triumphs. Its through our imperfections that can sometimes be the biggest blessings we experience. It’s through our imperfections that allow us to share our experience, hope and strength with others. What is gaining the entire world if any of us could loose it all in a single second?

It’s through our imperfections that we gain wisdom and insight that makes us better people and allows us to be of maximum service to our community. It’s through those imperfect circumstances some of my biggest triumphs where fostered. It’s the imperfections and the stories and lessons that come from those times that can never be taken away form me. It’s through those lessons I’ve learned during times of imperfection that can be the biggest blessing to others. It take a great deal of vulnerability, humility and courage but if you’re humble enough it’s through those imperfect testimonies that can lead others to experience their full potential.
