We recently connected with Faerie Compean and have shared our conversation below.
Faerie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am very happy as an artist and creative! I view life as being all about creation. That doesn’t just include traditional art but also things like expression, cooking, fashion, building beautiful relationships and connections, etc. Creating what is good & meant for you. I will forever be a creative person as it’s a huge part of my life!
Faerie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Art and creation has always been a necessity in my life since I was young. I’ve tried so many different forms and mediums. Right now the art that I’m creating is crochet, drawing, music, poetry, button making, & content creation. I really want to try making films to express myself too! I think one of my current favorites is making buttons. My button pins have designs for chronically ill and disabled people. A lot of people enjoy using pins to express themselves or help others understand them better. They can also be a great way to communicate your needs if you’re disabled! What I love about making pins for this community is that people feel seen, understood, and included. Being able to see your disorder or disability on a pin can make you feel less alone. I, as a disabled person, know what it’s like to not be included in society. The messages I receive from customers keep me creating even if I feel sick everyday. It’s an honor to create pins for my community.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My main audience comes from TikTok. I’ve built it up so far in a few different ways. My favorite way is just to create videos of what it’s like to be chronically ill. Whether that’s talking about symptoms, medical gaslighting, or needing mobility aids. I love being able to teach and bring awareness to being disabled. Especially since there are things that need to be addressed. For example, the medical system in the United States is awful. Especially to people of color or female/assigned female at birth people. My second way is to show my creations. Sometimes people will request certain designs, products, or crochet projects. My advice for newbies is to be consistent. When you are using social media to boost your business you have to be very consistent. The algorithms need to see that your content is liked in order for you to grow. It can be very tricky and you have to know how to create good content. Part of having a small business is being a content creator
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Ways you can help artists, creators, and small businesses is buying from them directly. Want a crochet hat? Buy from a small business. Want unique art for your house? Check out local or online artists. Want a good meal? Try a family owned restaurant! You don’t even have to spend money to support people either. Simply liking and sharing their posts can help tremendously. If you know an artist personally you can also ask them if there’s anyway you can help! There are often small artist/creative/business communities in cities and towns. Get to know people and interact with the community. You may see that they stick together as a family. I’ve witnessed this in my city and it’s beautiful.
