We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Fábio Freitas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Fábio below.
Fábio, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s go back in time to when you were an intern or apprentice – what’s an interesting story you can share from that stage of your career?
Back at University of Tennessee the technician asked me for a couple of weeks to mimic the publicity of Fabio that said I can’t believe is not butter.
Fábio, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always wanted to work with animals since primary school. The only thing that changed was that I wanted to be a marine biologist, then a biologist, and latter on, a Vet. I’ve been creating new experiences and going out to try to bring the best influences and knowledge to my country.
A lot of my collegues are going abroad and emigrating, but I want to stay and help the medicine to evolve keeping in touch with international doctors and keeping good relations.
There are very few doctors of my expertise in my country so its very hard for animals and people to have the best care, or even to have any kind of proper care.
Another thing that I am special proud of is to help students in my country, providing opinion and ideas of places to do Erasmus and learn with the best while having a life changing experience

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I did one and a half pos graduation in another country during the pandemics. Had to go by car, by myself, 5 hours to Madrid to be able to continue my studies.
Actually before everything stopped because of the pandemic, I was 3-5 days to almost get stuck in a foreign country and not even noticing it.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I would definitely choose the same thing. Although veterinary doctors don’t get paid enough, are not considered health professionals and I’m in a country that is always in risk of going in recession. I love animals, so I would do it all over again!
