We were lucky to catch up with Fabio Castillo recently and have shared our conversation below.

Fabio, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?

I began my journey as a videographer by immersing myself in the world of videography through self-study and hands-on experience. I extensively researched videography techniques, equipment, and industry trends through online resources, books, tutorials, and forums. This helped me gain a solid theoretical foundation. I actively engaged in shooting videos and experimenting with different techniques. I filmed various subjects, explored lighting setups, and practiced composition and framing to refine my skills. I also sought opportunities to work alongside experienced videographers and production teams. This allowed me to observe their workflows, learn from their expertise, and gain valuable insights into the industry. Seeking out a mentor in the early stages provided me with guidance, constructive feedback, and industry-specific insights. A mentor can accelerate learning by sharing their expertise and offering tailored advice. Actively collaborating with other videographers and professionals in the industry exposed me to diverse perspectives, alternative approaches, and new techniques. Networking can open doors to new opportunities and valuable learning experiences.

Mastering the operation of professional cameras, understanding different lenses, and learning how to achieve optimal exposure, focus, and framing are fundamental skills for capturing high-quality footage. Developing an eye for composition, understanding the rule of thirds, and utilizing framing techniques are crucial for creating visually appealing and engaging videos. Additionally, the ability to tell a compelling story through visuals enhances the production’s overall impact. Proficiency in video editing software, understanding pacing, transitions, color grading, and sound design are essential skills that allow for compelling storytelling and the creation of polished final products.

Fabio, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Hello, My name is Fabio Castillo. I run a Media Production company based out of Orlando, Florida. I initially started as a photographer taking photos of myself and posting them to social media. Over time, I grew a fan base from the pictures I was taking which led to conducting photoshoots for other people. Overtime time I continued to grow my portfolio and become known for producing high-quality images for clients. I started to produce videos around late 2021. I began my video journey by producing music videos for local artists in Orlando. Over time I gained the skills to create higher-quality videos which landed me bigger and bigger jobs. Currently, I am focused on producing commercial content for local businesses as well as music videos for artists all around the state of Florida. I work alongside marketing agencies to help artists and businesses achieve their goals.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

I bought my first camera with money that I saved from having a summer job. Over time I saved money and kept buying new equipment to supplement my growing business. During the first year of my journey, I was still in college. Every semester I would have leftover money from scholarships and grants that I received and I would use that money to upgrade my gear. From there I just used to the money I made from doing shoots to continue to upgrade and maintain my gear.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

Without a doubt, word of mouth has been the most powerful and effective source of acquiring new clients for me. When a client recommends my services to others, it carries significant weight. Word-of-mouth referrals come from a place of trust, as they are based on personal experiences and positive interactions with my work. This builds a sense of credibility and instills confidence in potential clients.
