We recently connected with Fabiana Espinoza and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Fabiana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I am a self taught photographer. When I was nine, I had an iPad mini and would take photos of insects in my backyard and then edit the colors and brightness. Later, my father discovered what had been the lens of a small camera. I started putting it above my iPad’s camera to zoom in on details. From then on, Photography became something I was very passionate about. My first ever digital camera was a gift from my Uncle when I moved to the United States, a Panasonic DMC-Fz70 that he had previously owned and it was incredibly precious to me I used it for 5 years. It was the camera I used for my first ever Photography gig too! Most of what I learned about photography, and editing softwares came from YouTube tutorials or photography books, which meant I could learn at my own pace, and while it was slow and required a lot of patience from me and my loved ones, I wouldn’t change a thing.
In 2021 I had the privilege to be gifted a new Digital Camera, my parents saw a lot of potential in me and constantly put me to test, although that camera was a gift I had to prove them I could get places with my photography.
My biggest obstacle has been and I’m sure it will continue to be my fear of failure, for many years It kept me from trying new methods and styles simply because I did not believe I could handle the idea of failing myself and my family. But I am very stubborn and my need to continue improving and learning had allowed me to come this far with my work.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Fabiana Espinoza, I am a self-taught photographer. I was born in the beautiful country of Costa Rica and moved to Texas in 2016. My work expands from Landscape, architecture, nature, and portraits. Photography has been my passion since I was young and for nine years I have learned and rehearsed many distinct skills. I work as a portrait photographer for all kinds of events, from birthdays to graduations, pregnancy photoshoots, and everything in between, any occasion is worth remembering and my job is to make sure those memories are forever there for people to look back to. I’ve been a portrait photographer since 2019 and have faced numerous challenges. Many people believe I’m too young to be trusted as their photographer, and some even believe I don’t deserve to be paid for my work. For nearly four years, I’ve had to earn the trust and respect of those I offer my services as well as fellow photographers. Even so, I like to believe that when I give someone a photo shoot I want to show them that as a person they do not need to fit into this one-size box to be a model and feel beautiful.
I’m incredibly proud of how far I have come, my photography career has grown thanks to my efforts and the support my family and friends have given me as well as the opportunities others have given me to be their photographer I still have a long way to go and I will continue to grow and learn!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal has always been to work as a wildlife photographer for National Geographic. I currently work with portraits and have done some advertising, but my true passion is wildlife and nature photography. I come from one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, and nature is a big part of my life and my passion. My main objective is to be able to capture Nature’s beauty and the effects we are having on her in order to raise awareness about pollution, global warming, and environmental destruction. With my work, I hope to contribute to the conservation of nature.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I mostly use Instagram. I started my photography account as a personal account so whenever people asked to follow me I gave them my photography account. This helped me grow in following and share my work to more people, eventually as I kept posting more people began following me to see my work. I try to always be active in my account and post often that way more people see it. I also made a tiktok to further expand my audience.
I do want to make one final point that is very important: when you put your work online for others to see and critique, you start to take likes and views very seriously, which can be draining. Therefore, it is crucial to understand your worth as an artist; whether you have two or two thousand likes, your work is still valuable to share because it demonstrates your progress. Use social media to support your own development rather than to meet the expectations of others.
