We were lucky to catch up with Fabian Renteria recently and have shared our conversation below.
Fabian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am definitely happy as an artist/creative. Being an artist is what keeps me sane. I always rely on creating to help me release any and all emotions that get built up. At this point it is part of my everyday life and I would not have it any other way. I cannot see myself working a normal job. I’ve been there and I was absolutely miserable. I am lucky to be able to make a living doing what I love.
I recently joined the Education Team at BERNINA of America. I get to teach others about what our sewing machines can do while creating my own designs/ideas to show just how amazing our products are. I can definitely tell you that jobs in creative fields do exist, you just have to know where to look.

Fabian, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started teaching myself to sew at age 10 and I quickly became addicted. I would come home from school and sew on the weekends. By the time it came time for college I knew going to Fashion School was it for me. I moved to LA to attend FIDM. I received endless opportunities with them and have had my work featured in publications such as PAPER Magazine and more. I showed my first New York Fashion Week Collection quickly after graduating.
I want people to know that everything I do; I have worked hard for and I do not come from money/wealth whatever you want to call it. I am grateful for every single person who follows and supports me.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
All creators deserve equal opportunity. It is a struggle to be a small creator with big ideas and have the same creators receiving ALL of the opportunities. We all deserve to grow and make a living doing what we love. You have no idea how much of a difference one like, one repost, one comment can make. Support that local coffee shop, buy the art from that local artist, order that custom embroidered sweater from that indie designer.
We as a society should focus more on shopping with small and local businesses. local networking events can also be major help. This is how we can support artists and support a creative eco system.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be a major name in the Fashion and DIY communities. I want to combine my passions for sewing and fashion and teach people how they can create their own fashion through pattern making and sewing. This is the driving force behind what I am doing and why I do it.
Sewing and being an artist/creative is not a hobby for me. It is a way of life and it has helped me to escape the not so pretty things in life. I want to share what it has done for me so that others can see what it can do for them.
