We recently connected with Fabia Owen and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Fabia , thanks for joining us today. So, folks often look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight – but that often obscures all the nitty, gritty details of everything that went into the growth phase of your business. We’d love to hear about your scaling story and how you scaled up?
When people see my photography work today — the beautiful sessions, the happy clients, the creative themes — they often assume it all happened quickly, almost effortlessly. But the truth is far from that. My business didn’t grow overnight. It took years of trial and error, sacrifice, and relentless determination behind the scenes.
In the beginning, I had nothing but a camera, a dream, and a deep love for capturing emotions. I started by photographing family and friends, sometimes for free, just to build a portfolio. I had no studio, no equipment, and barely any clients. What I did have was a vision: to create memories people would treasure forever.
Scaling up wasn’t a straight path. I faced financial challenges, self-doubt, and the difficulty of balancing work and family life — especially being a mom and working from home. I made mistakes: investing in tools I didn’t need, undercharging my work, and saying yes to everything out of fear of losing clients.
But everything started changing when I became intentional. I created a brand around what made my photography different: emotional storytelling, creative themes, and experiences tailored to each client. I invested in education, learned how to market on social media, and connected with my audience by being real and vulnerable — not just selling sessions, but sharing my heart and passion behind every shoot.
A big turning point came when I offered seasonal mini-sessions and unique themes that caught people’s attention. Word of mouth grew, clients returned, and new ones found me. Slowly, I was able to buy better equipment, improve my editing and raise my prices confidently.
Looking back, it was never about one single moment of success — it was hundreds of small, consistent actions. My growth came from listening to clients, adapting when things didn’t work, staying creative, and above all, never giving up.
My journey is still evolving, but I hope sharing it helps others realize that success is built over time, with heart, hustle, and patience.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into photography began in a very personal and nostalgic way. I’ve always been someone who treasures memories — the kind of person who holds on to old photographs, tickets, handwritten notes. I believe memories are one of life’s most valuable treasures, and photographs are a way to keep them alive forever. That deep love for remembering and preserving special moments inspired me to buy my first camera — not with the intention of starting a business, but simply to photograph my family and friends.
Everything changed the day someone I knew was getting married. I was so excited at the thought of capturing their special day. They trusted me enough to pay me for their wedding photos, and I’ll never forget how it felt. I was inexperienced, yes — but my heart was fully in it. That experience lit a fire in me. I realized this is what I wanted to do: to tell stories through my lens, to capture raw emotion, beauty, connection — all the things we never want to forget.
Today, I offer professional photography services focused on love, family, childhood, and life’s milestones. From weddings and quinceañeras to newborns and creative themed sessions, I strive to create experiences that are deeply personal and unforgettable.
What sets my work apart is the emotional depth I pour into every session. I don’t just take pictures — I try to freeze time, to give my clients something they can feel every time they look at their photos. I pay attention to the little details, because I believe those are the moments that truly matter.
I’m most proud of the connection I’ve built with my clients. Many of them come back to me year after year, and I get to see their families grow through my lens. My goal is always to make them feel seen, loved, and remembered through my work.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about my brand, it’s that every session is more than a job — it’s a piece of my heart. I photograph with emotion, intention, and genuine care, because I know that one day, these images will mean everything.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my mission is to capture the beauty, emotion, and uniqueness in every stage of life especially moments that often go unnoticed. I want my photography to help people treasure their memories, see the magic in their everyday lives, and feel seen, valued, and loved
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding part is seeing the emotions my work brings out in people tears, smiles, even silence. Knowing that a photo I took will be cherished for a lifetime, or passed down through generations, makes everything worth it. It’s a beautiful feeling to turn fleeting moments into timeless memories
