We were lucky to catch up with Ezra Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ezra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you’ve thought about whether to sign with an agent or manager?
OK so i actually just got signed to an agent not too long ago! For the past 3-4 years in this industry i have not been signed! But the crazy thing is majority of the big jobs and opportunities that i’ve received in my career have been without an agent! Its literally been me and God against the world haha! no but seriously i think we underestimate the power of social media! For instance one of my big jobs was going on a festival tour with bia and going on tour with bia and don toliver and that was all because me and my friends cam and erik posted ourselves dancing to bia”s song “covergirl” and the video blew up and she hit us in the dms to be her dancers! my mentors have always told me agents are accessories and not necessities! as long as your consistent on your dreams they are bound to come true! But now i’m signed yo Go 2 talent agency and they are so amazing! the moment i got signed they put me on to 3 big jobs and i couldn’t be more grateful for them! i audition for them and my agent lisa told me she couldn’t take her eyes off me and she knew right then and there that she wanted to sign me! and for that i’m forever grateful! Because not being signed wasn’t a choice i’ve submitted many times to other agents and even got referrals and it just never worked out for me! But go 2 talent saw something in me and now im so grateful that i’m signed to them!
Ezra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi beautiful people my name is Ezra Johnson and I’ve been dancing since before I could walk hahaha I started training in a studio by the age of nine by the name of triple seven dance studio! I started off as a competition dancer, and I used to do concert work every now and then, but by the age of 16, I learned about the industry from going to a hip-hop intensive and once I learned about the commercial industry, I knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! one of the first people that I looked up to in the industry was name is Dexter care! I loved Dexter so much because he was the one that truly made me realize who I was in this industry and he gave me my first opportunity by dancing in a music video, called “snatch yo wig” by Sharaya J featuring in Missy Elliott! and that I will say it was a great way to start off my debut into the industry, but as time went by, I learned a lot of lessons, and it didn’t get any easier! When I graduated high school, I decided that I wanted to dance in the industry and give it a try. I got a part-time job and I was Training in a dance company by one of my inspirations name Anthony Burrell! Anthony was also someone who helped me receive a big opportunity by dancing with Lil Yachty in an NFL halftime show, and that alone was really dope and something that I was truly grateful for! as I was getting into the industry and dancing with the professionals. It really took a big toll on my mental health, and I eventually stopped dancing! I truly thought this was something that was supposed to come easy but little did I know that was not the case at all! I stop dancing for about 11 months and being away from Dance made me realize how much I loved it and I vowed that if I was going to be in the dance industry, then I promise that it would never take the love that I have for Dance ever again! And from there I got back into dancing and I didn’t look back! Something that I’m truly proud of is moving to the West Coast and healing with my mental health for dance! I started dancing full-time, I was in Residencies, such as rated red at area 15 and Vegas the show at Planet Hollywood not only that I was able to go on tour with BIA choreograph a music video for BIA choreograph a set for French Montana and be in HBO Max series by the name of “where here” and so much more! I also started teaching in Vegas and made a big name for myself as a dance teacher! My journey in this industry is far from over, and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for me!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best thing that society can do is support!support is a big thing that can help take a future superstar to the next level. Sometimes it’s not about how many people see it it’s about who sees it sometimes you putting someone’s art on your Instagram story could make that one person that could change their life see it and take them to the next level , sometimes support is free and all you have to do is like, share, or comment, or show a friend and you never know what that support you just gave could do for someone’s career!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
there’s honestly no particular goal or mission. All I really wanna do is dance my heart away while I’m on this earth and serve my purpose for God and give back to the people that have worked so hard for me to be where I’m at to this day.
