We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ezra and Sarah Reich. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ezra and Sarah below.
Ezra and Sarah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
As a small family business we have always prioritized the highest quality, organic and clean ingredients. We source all the eggs for our buns from local farmers, use grass-fed butter and in general source as much local as possible. We would never sell something we didn’t feel good about eating ourselves.

Ezra and Sarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are a married couple that started our cottage food business in 2017 in Los Angeles. We specialize in Swedish’ sweet buns, called Bullar. The idea came when Sarah who moved to the US and is originally from Sweden, decided with Ezra to be a source for these beloved pastries in the United States. They are found in every coffee shop in Sweden and are basically the national pastry over there. We were able to build a large and dedicated clientele quickly through our social media, wholesale location on Abbot Kinney, and Melrose place farmers market. During the shutdowns of 2020 we decided to move ourselves and the business to Lake Arrowhead, a mounatin community in the San Bernardino mountains. Because of our large and loyal LA client base we were able to continue to serve many customers who come to visit the area as well as establish new clients in the mountains and inland empire.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
We met each other when Sarah was still living in Stockholm, Sweden and Ezra was living there temporarily working in music production. After a period of time we moved back to America together and got married and during that time when Sarah was waiting for her initial green card and couldn’t work, she baked a lot of buns which was Ezra’s favorite treat. Thus the idea for Bulle Bakery was born.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
This all comes down to the quality and authenticity of the buns. From day one, we decided not to let more expensive ingredients dissuade us from making the best most delicious handmade pastry we could. As a result, many Swedes who grew up with these buns were blown away with them and we often have heard they are the best they have ever had. This enthusiasm transferred over to Americans and all people who tried them and because of this we were able to always rely on word of mouth and the cravings of our customers.
