We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ezerd Land a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ezerd, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Risks. Take them. Take them all the time. Whether it’s something as small as trying a new medium or method in my art making to something large like moving to New York City knowing no one and with no money – just a place offered up for me to sleep, I take many risks. The thing about risks is – it’s something that you want to do, but that voice in your head does all its mountain of calculations and incessant listing of all the potential failures, failings, wrongs, obstacles, and hazards to keep you in the same place. Risk is change. Change is the unknown. That voice in your head – its job is to keep you safe and protected, so that unknown is dangerous – no matter how big or small that risk. Jumping from a cliff or ordering a different beverage than your usual – alarm bells! Risk is the only way you’ll get to someplace or to be someone different than what is or you are at precisely this moment, so take that chance. It’s okay if it takes you a while to convince yourself to move forward in that risk – even confronting those alarms is a lovely risk itself. The next lesson is – even if you don’t land exactly where you’ve aimed, you are perfectly where you need to be. It’s all beautiful.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
All in all, I’m just Ezerd. And that’s beautiful. At this writing, I shall claim that I am a non binary artist living in the Bronx, New York City. I currently only use CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and key – black) colors, as well as UV reactive and glow in the dark mediums to create my work. My focus is on originals. I feel there is an importance to the transfer of energy to the artwork and to the viewer. The imagery consists of amorphous color fields, robots, spaceships, other worldly beings, and what I call beingships – highly intricately drawn forms that may be interpreted in a number of ways. I explore oneness and the concepts of interconnectivity despite the barriers that have been constructed for and which humans construct for themselves. The art embraces the potential planes of perception and perspective to which humans with their limited input systems may or may not be attuned. I aim to get to the heart of humanity and the core of human existence.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
What can society do to best support artists and creatives? Simple. Support them. Buy their work. Show their work. Tell others about their work. Spread the word. It’s as simple as that. Invest in that person and their creativity. You don’t need someone else’s permission to like something. You don’t need that mass manufactured item that’s been produced by a company that isn’t treating their workers well, isn’t mindful of their environmental impact, and in more and more cases may be stealing designs from artists and small businesses. When you uplift an artist or a creative, you’re sending happy sparks through them that will ripple out bigger and brighter back into the world. Do you think that can be said of those box stores and corporations? Think of your support – your words – your money – as energy. Where do you want to put it? What energy do you want to amplify and enhance?

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I can’t choose just one aspect of being an artist or creative that is the most rewarding. It’s the entirety of it. To birth something from nothing – to take the raw materials and make something that hasn’t been seen or made before – to present that to the world and witness how it affects others – the emotions it stirs, the connections it makes, builds, enhances, severs or restores – to witness a pause, a distraction, and a relief from whatever stresses, worry, or suffering someone was experiencing being replace with curiosity, wonder, joy, happiness, and even laughter – to form connections with these strangers who become collectors and whose love and support makes them chosen family. It’s all a beautiful journey and I’m the only one that witnesses it from this perspective with this set of lenses. That is incredible. I deeply appreciate and thank everyone who has been part of my storyline – my existence. It’s been an incredible adventure.
