We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eydie Matteos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Eydie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My father was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2019, during one of the most difficult and stressful times in my family’s lives. During his treatments at SouthCoast Center for Cancer, he was introduced to Reiki, and this is when my adventure as a Reiki devotee began. As I learned more about this modality, I felt it was what I needed to be doing. The more I read, the more questions I had. I’ve always been an empath, fascinated by ghosts, and can sense energy in people and spaces.
In December of 2021 I meditated for a week and opened Pandora’s box (I’ll start publishing my journal entries soon). Given that I’d always suspected there was something off about me, this voyage confirmed it. I began planning a Wellness Retreat for June 2022 in January 2022. I needed a name and a logo, but I had a name and a logo in mind all along.
The logo is a Lemon Balm Flower (Cidreira) that blooms naturally on my paternal grandparents’ mountain farm in Monte Verde, (Sao Vicente), Cabo Verde. I grew up plucking these beautiful flowers and drinking tea. As a result, it has always been precious to me and a reminder of my home country. It was simple to come up with a name. Healing Villa, we will spend our entire physical lives healing and becoming better versions of ourselves. The Villa means “village.” I come from a large family and know firsthand what love, assistance, and advice feels like. I began to build my tribe of like-minded people.
In April 2022, I began training for Reiki I, and this is where the Journey took off. Early June, I trained for Reiki II, and all I can say is that the force was overwhelming, and I had little control over my talents. At this time, I am prepared and have received adequate training to assist my June Wellness Retreat. Everyone who went, including the service providers and myself, had an amazing fulfilling day, but I wanted more.
I fell in love with the Mill in November 2022, was shown a space, and quickly pulled the trigger. I knew in my heart that this was where I was going to start my Healing Journey for myself and others. I didn’t have a written business strategy, but I knew what I wanted to do with my space and how my business would be different. I designed a setting that conveys the tale of who I am. I have put and will continue to pour my heart into this space.
The Shop is dedicated to my Great Uncles, who were New Bedford Whalers (living the American Dream). Cabo Verde and African items are available to express my ancestry and history. I have holistic/art items made locally by women who are now a part of my Villa and who support my creativity and desire to help people from all walks of life.
I trained again in June 2023, but this time it was Reiki Holy Fire III. By far the most amazing and intensive training. This is where I excelled in the energy field, where I could let go and feel liberated. The training increased my love and gratitude for GOD! My experience taught me to approach everything in life with love and without judgment and to create an atmosphere of security for everyone who passes through my door or into my life. Throughout the training, it became evident that I am a light worker who is extremely sensitive to the energy of others. Accepting my ability to help heal and give messages from ancestors and previous loved ones has completely transformed my life.
I have not only defined a Village within my own space, but I have also expanded into other businesses in the Mill and the New Bedford Community. This is simply a test of what it takes to believe in yourself, trust your intuition, and build a village that will embrace, respect, and love you wholeheartedly.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Creating a welcoming and non-judgmental environment is essential in any client-centered business, especially one that focuses on holistic well-being. By designing a retail space that exudes comfort and relaxation, you’re setting the stage for a positive experience. Offering products crafted by local herbalists and energy healers not only supports the community but also provides clients with a unique, personalized touch. This approach reflects a deep understanding of the importance of a harmonious atmosphere in promoting healing and well-being. It’s a thoughtful strategy that likely resonates well with clients seeking a supportive and holistic experience.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Authenticity in business is a cornerstone of building a strong reputation. It fosters trust and loyalty among customers and clients, which are essential for long-term success. When a business leader is authentic, they not only adhere to their true values and principles but also communicate transparently within their community. This genuine approach resonates with customers, who often seek to support businesses that align with their own values. Moreover, authenticity can differentiate a business in a competitive market, as it creates a unique and relatable brand identity. Ultimately, maintaining authenticity is not just beneficial for reputation; it’s a sustainable business practice that can lead to greater customer satisfaction and retention.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The realization that a business must pivot is a critical juncture in any entrepreneurial journey. It often comes from recognizing that the current strategy is not yielding the desired results, as was the case when social media engagement proved insufficient. The decision to immerse oneself in the community and attend networking events can be transformative. It not only facilitates direct engagement with potential clients and customers but also establishes a presence within the community that can lead to organic growth and opportunities. Moreover, giving back to the community can enhance a business’s reputation and foster goodwill, which are invaluable assets in the long-term success of any venture. This approach reflects a proactive and holistic understanding of business development, where relationships and community involvement are as crucial as any marketing strategy.
