Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Exodus Brownlow. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Exodus thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
More than anything, a trueness to the self. Success can be defined by so many non-limiting factors, personal beliefs and ideologies. To me, having a secure understanding of what that looks like for you ultimately leads to success. A trueness to the self honors who you are now, and who you could be tomorrow.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Exodus Oktavia Brownlow and I’m a Blackhawk, Ms native writer, editor, and rising sewist. However, I would give up all pursuits and passions for the one craft that means the absolute most to me–writing. Writing is so special, and whether you practice it or not, it’s such an imperative part of all our days. Even the day-to-days are set by sending our closest friends, and relatives a “Good Morning” text, a “How ya doin’ today?”. As a writer, technically author as of 2023, I’ve been published by Electric Lit, BOOTH, F(r)iction, Denver Quarterly, Wigleaf, West Branch and more. I am the authoress of two books–a fiction chapbook called “Look at All The Little Hurts of These Newly-Broken Lives and The Bittersweet, Sweet and Bitter Loves” with Ethel Zine and Press and a collection of essays “I’m Afraid That I Know Too Much About Myself Now, To Go Back to Who I Knew Before, And Oh Lord, Who Will I Be After I’ve Known All That I Can?” published with ELJ Editions.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I wish to create more lightness in the world. Be it through words, actions or considerations. I have a very radical belief in happiness–beginnings, currents, endings–and I desire it not only for myself, but for everyone. As individuals, we are much more impactful than we believe. All it takes is a determined mindset to do the best that we can, towards ourself and others, to create bountiful changes in the world, to establish peace, and unconditional love and happiness. The secret is actually us, if you can believe it. And I hope that everyone does.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
During my teenage years, and slowly coming into my own as writer and what I wanted to do, what would have really benefited me was more access to creative writing classes, workshops and internships that could’ve taught me more about being an editor and the publishing process. I am always so very proud to see young writers today gaining access to this knowledge and experience. It makes such a difference to know the business aspects behind the craft, and gives so much confidence to the creative. The younger you are able to have access to right kind of resources, the better.
