We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ewurama Hayford Ampofo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ewurama, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
Investing time in clients who do not value what I have to offer! I went through a period of time when I was so desperate for business that I would actually allow people to haggle for lower prices. I once offered to shooot a portrait session for 50% less of my usual price. She ended up being disatisfied with my style and how she looked and demanded a refund . Painfully, I have learnt that, investing your time poorly ends up costing you money, particularly in the creative space .
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always had fascination with portriature. I remember flipping through magazines and marvelling at how different the pictures look from “regular” photos. My curiosity led me to buying my first professional camera with my tax refund, and book on photography. I photgraphed everything, obsessively, all the time. My first “gig” was my best friend’s wedding , and I surprised her with a slideshow of behind the scenes photos of her day set to music, and it was go form there. I have always and will always love portriature and it is where I am most comfortable and creative. I live for the moment when the subject gets comfortable, drops their defenses – that’s when the magic happens. I currently children and adut portaiture, and headshots for business owners. I love clean, crisp and vibrant images that convey the energy of the subject and grab the viewer. .
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth! There is nothing better with a satisfed client who passes your name along!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Seeing my vision and work live on my clients’ walls, holding a moment when they felt most beautiful in time forever. That is what gives me the most satisfaction.
