We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Evon Pollack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Evon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love for you to start by sharing your thoughts about the pros and cons of family businesses.
I come from a family of self starters and entrepreneurs. My father was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. He came to this country with little to nothing, for a better life for he and his siblings. He was a musician that toured all over the country spreading the joy that reggae music brings. Once he locked in a few successful hits, he took the proceeds and started Mobay Cafe in Wilmington, Delaware.
I like to believe I have that same entrepreneurship spirit and I see glimmers of it in my 7 year old daughter! For me, it’s about leaving a legacy for my girls. They are our first taste testers and they see the hard work and dedication my wife and I put into every order. For us, Marley’s Moss isn’t just about providing excellent customer service or quick shipping; it’s about setting our intentions before we make every order. We are careful to ensure we make every purchase to order and ensure we pour a little bit of our love and light into each batch. We like to think we send a tad bit of our family to our customers, whether they’re in Vegas, Orlando, New York, or right down the street in D.C.!
Evon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We started Marley’s Moss after we received a few requests for orders from friends and family. I was posting on my personal social media accounts and I kept getting DM’s and text messages asking if I could send them some. The entrepreneur in me took over and Marley’s Moss was born. Marley’s Moss is a family business. We are a third generation Jamaican Sea Moss cultivating business built on curating the finest products for our consumers. Being of Jamaican descent I grew up on sea moss. My grandfather taught my dad, my dad taught me, and now I am teaching my daughters.
We started out small and took orders via social media direct messages and then after a few months decided to go all in. My wife created our website and orchestrated the digital marketing and here we are. We’ve added more flavors and have plenty more in the pipeline.
Marley’s Moss isn’t solely focused on sea moss. We also make elderberry syrup, elderberry gummies, and sea moss gummies. This winter we are preparing to launch our handcrafted tea blends. My wife is currently in the lab perfecting the blends. We’re excited for what’s to come! We are going into our third year of business and we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best two sources of new clients we have thus far is social media and word of mouth. Since we got our start on social media it’s only right we recognize the power in it. It’s an easy, effective, and relatively cost effective way to reach our goals. Having the ability to focus ads at any given time to a specific demographic from the comfort of our home has been substantially helpful.
Providing products that exceed customer expectations while being able to maintain a superior level of customer service has been the other source to not only attract but to also keep our clients. We understand sea moss is a niche product, growing in popularity because of the pandemic. I believe what we have managed to do is take a product that many weren’t familiar with and turn it into a staple in many homes.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Funny enough, as a family owned business, we keep it in the family! My business partner is my wife. Initially, she had never used sea moss so she was a bit perplexed when I brought it to her. She then did a bit of research and saw all the benefits. We had our youngest daughter about a year before we launched Marley’s Moss and she was still dealing with some postpartum effects. She basically became the official tester. Immediately, she noticed changes to her energy level, libido, and iron levels. It was easy for her to see the vision I had for the brand after having experienced all the benefits. Marley’s Moss is a collaborative effort and we all have our roles. We recognize that we must each fulfill our roles to continue to grow. To answer the question, I met her at a Labor Day cookout in 2008.
