We recently connected with Evin DeShawn and have shared our conversation below.
Evin , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
It’s actually has been very recent, I took two risk. The first one is that I decided that I wanted to push myself as a creative director and building my portfolio. By funding my own creative projects that I can tie my fashion styling background into the mix. And, the second would be starting and launching our creatives social club The CRE8TOR’s CONNECT. My business partner Kendu and myself have taken a leap to start this networking club and organization. Our mission is to provide networking events, resources, cross branding, and more. All that would be that would be created for creatives or others. That just want to learn, network, or help you plan your next creatives event. We are taking the risk together to cater to a space within our creatives community that we have a deep love and passion for. Which is creating and learning together and from each other. So far things are lining up very well we are taking our time to build it our way. Which is definitely a very beautiful and organic process with Kendu.
Evin , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I actually wear a few different hats. From motivational speaker, published fashion stylist, creative director, and traveling MC’e and host. All of things have shown me that I have a gift and purpose here. I consider myself an energy or vibe provider. Because in all these fields as I’m making them work for me. They allow me to show others different ways of doing, seeing, and experiencing things for a better outcome. If my mission is open door for myself while reaching back for others. As I elevate and grow. I am super proud of how I’ve been to take leaps and risk on myself to try something new that isn’t common here. To be able bring a piece of my home to here especially with how I host/MC’e. Nobody sounds or has the energy I bring when me and my DJs are rocking out. From the way, I dance in my sets and talk it all is me. I treat the events I do as a therapy session. How can I make everyone on this room leave like they just had time of their life? Or leaving here lighter because you never know what people are dealing with. And that is the most rewarding thing to me. Is to see how the spaces I occupy with my energy takes over the room. I use to be so ashamed that I liked to be center of attention until I found a positive way to flip it into something bigger than me. I’ve been able to touch many people through just being open and honest about everything. I strongly believe your gifts will lead you to your purpose. And it hasn’t failed me yet.
I would say my most proudest moment is honestly not giving up on myself. Especially in the mist of some of my lowest and darkest times. Along with faith and a good support system.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s honestly seeing the finished product. After all the planning and preparations it’s truly the best. Because you never know exactly how it will come out you just gotta trust that it will. Especially after putting all your hard work in. For me a lot of late nights and early mornings. It’s like I can’t even rest without it getting out into universe. Then, once it’s out you feel so alive and free. But it’s like it only last for a minute you right back to chasing your next idea.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
That I have to allow myself to take care of myself first. And that is not selfish or wrong but necessary for me to be as great as I want to be. After having to cater to other priorities in order to help my family and just priorities. Now I know that is so necessary to check in with myself. And make sure my cup is full first. Then, whatever runs over is for everyone else.
