We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Evette Henderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Evette, thanks for joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
During the summer time in 2022, I was sitting at a table at an event and a lady approached me. She asked me if she could sit next to me. I told her that would be fine. When she sat down she asked me if I could tell her about myself. I don’t know why but I felt comfortable with telling her about me. At the end of our conversation she said, “I want you to work for our company”. Her colleague stopped by the table and she introduced me to her. The colleague then said, “I like you, you should work for our company”. We exchanged information before the event ended. Several months later a manager from the company contacted me. She stated that my name was given to her and she would like to interview me for a position that had opened in their company. I did not think that I was qualified for the position but I agreed to do the interview. My interview went well and I was offered the position. This position was several steps forward for me. It’s not just a job, it’s a career. I was put in that position just by being myself. This all happened because someone took a moment to get to know me. It feels great for someone to give me an opportunity only by meeting me for a moment.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a self published author. I have written three poetry books. The reason why I choose to write poetry is because I can be creative. When I was younger I’ve always wanted to write poetry but I didn’t exactly know how to write a poem. As I gotten older it seems like poetry has chosen me. “Out of My Head and Into Yours Poetry”, is my first book. It was a challenge to publish because I had a lot of poems that I have written over the years and I couldn’t make up my mind on which poems to put in my first book. My second book, “My Life in a Poetic Type of Way; Based on a true life” was very emotional for me. I originally wanted this to be the first book that I published. I wasn’t quite ready to let the world into my world. One day I decided that my story needed to be told. As I was putting the book together, I couldn’t stop crying. This book is about my life from a kid to now. It’s a true story written in poetry. After I released my second book, I decided that I needed to release more of an uplifting book. If Awesome Was a Person; Positive Thoughts & Affirmations Poetry is the third book I’ve published. It’s a affirmation poetry book that you can read that makes you feel good.
My books can be purchased on Amazon.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Sometimes I hold a drawing on my Facebook page and I give away my books. I ask the winners to leave a review on Amazon.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an author is when someone read my books and tell me how I inspired them to tell their story. It’s pretty cool and rewarding.
