We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Evelyn Suero a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Evelyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I hope my legacy will be that my story inspired people of all backgrounds to realize their ability to blaze their own path to success, on their own terms.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a global business and entertainment attorney, and owner of my law firm, Suero Law, PLLC. As an attorney for entrepreneurs and creatives, I help my clients build their dreams on a solid foundation. I make sure their interests are fully protected with contractual agreements that make sense, and I educate my clients about the importance of protecting and retaining ownership of their intellectual property. Many of my clients are also foreigners who are investing in the American dream via new businesses, franchises, and establishing new business relationships for their global companies. My clients appreciate that I can relate to their position as a new business owner and I can communicate directly with them in their language as a native Spanish speaker. I bring every part of myself to my practice and I am very proud of what I have been able to accomplish in a short period of time, and the high caliber clients, including some celebrities, who have trusted in my expertise to guide them to successful outcomes.
I am also the President of the South Florida chapter of the Organization for Women in International Trade (OWIT) where I work with chapters around the world to advance opportunities for women in global business. Through this organization, I have witnessed firsthand how women work together to break barriers and achieve what was once thought inconceivable. For me it is an enormous privilege to be a part of the birth of new businesses and new possibilities.
I have always been an entrepreneur and creative at heart so it was very natural for me to adapt my career to my interests. I also grew up surrounded by resourceful people, folks who knew how to leverage and barter their skills & possessions to survive despite very challenging circumstances. I apply this valuable skill to my law practice and I believe this makes me a better problem solver. I also do not believe in dead ends. I believe that obstacles are opportunities to find a better way. What sets me apart is I always find a way.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I was a serial networker and volunteer in the community for several years before I launched my business. I believe it is critical for your potential referral partners & potential clients to know who you are and what you do well before you startup. Build a reputable personal brand so that it will be easier to build a respected business brand.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Many of my clients come from other attorneys, even other business attorneys. I have found that you can build strategic relationships with would-be competitors and help them offer services to their clients that they may not be equipped to offer. The lesson is to search for opportunities where others may not think to look. Competing with others is not always the best approach, collaboration is the key to success.
