Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Evelyn Morales. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Evelyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
As a business owner, I find deep satisfaction in the autonomy and ability to manage my time that my entrepreneurship provides me. Despite this, they face challenges during the slow seasons, especially when demand for my water self-rescue classes is affected by cold weather. At such times, I consider exploring additional opportunities outside of my core business.
The thought of working for another employer with fixed hours and losing my current flexibility makes me uneasy. Valuing the freedom to structure my day and attend to family responsibilities, I find it crucial to maintain this flexibility in my professional life.
I am currently exploring various strategies to complement my existing business and make it more resilient to seasonal fluctuations. This approach includes creating and applying new tools and resources that can provide additional stability during periods of low activity in my core business.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Evelyn Morales and I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I have lived in North Carolina with my daughter Ariana since 2017. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s Degree in Human Resources. In the field of aquatic safety I have various certifications, such as Traditional Swimming Trainer, Aquatic Survival, Open Water Lifeguard, Aqua Aerobics Instructor and Aquatic Autism Certification.
When my daughter was just six months old, I started looking into swimming lessons and discovered the Infant Swimming Resource program, dedicated to aquatic survival for babies ages six months to six years. After taking the self-rescue program, I fell in love with it and decided to get certified as an ISR instructor.
ISR is a global leader in the industry. It pioneered survival swimming lessons for babies and toddlers in 1966. Highly trained ISR instructors provide the safest and most effective survival swimming lessons. Our mission, “Not Another Child Drowns,” is the foundation of everything we do to prevent the leading cause of accidental death for children under age 4 in the U.S.
ISR’s unique results are achieved through fully personalized, safe and effective one-on-one lessons with only the student and instructor in the water. What the child will learn and how she will learn makes ISR different from traditional swim lessons. Since statistics show that 83% of children who drown are clothed during the last week of school, under the supervision of the instructor, each student has the opportunity to practice her water survival skills in her daily clothing. Additionally, we offer instruction to parents within the aquatic environment, outlining guidelines on appropriate and inappropriate practices for the baby’s interaction with the marine environment.
ISR Fayetteville serves infants ages 6 months to 6 years Monday through Friday. Our season is from March to October and we have two locations, Raeford and Fayetteville and committed to the community we offer a special discount to first responders.
I am very proud to be an agent of change in my community, where my work is not only about saving lives, but also about imparting skills that allow people to enjoy the water safely and confidently. Throughout the years dedicated to this task, every time I witness a student floating skillfully in the water, experiencing a feeling of security and mastery, seeing the happy faces of his parents I find invaluable satisfaction. This result reinforces my commitment and I am proud to be able to contribute so significantly to the well-being and safety of those I serve.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
It is important to clearly define your brand’s mission and values in your business strategy. Offering an excellent service is positioned as a primary strategy to build a positive and lasting reputation. Responsibility and transparency are fundamental elements in building trust and credibility among your clients.
Each interaction and service provided must be aligned with these fundamental values, thus contributing to strengthening the positive perception of your brand in the market. This strategic combination not only fosters the loyalty of existing customers, but also attracts new business, ensuring solid and sustainable growth for your company in the long term.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Various sources can be leveraged to attract clients, such as personal references, industry influences, competitors, telephone prospecting, and social media platforms. In my case, direct recommendations from satisfied clients and favorable references from our program have been the main drivers of new business. I recognize the strategic importance of all these avenues and consider it essential to investigate the origin of each client to evaluate the effectiveness of our acquisition strategies.
Each of these sources requires careful and proactive management to maximize their impact. Keeping detailed track and analyzing which methods are generating positive results allows us to adjust our tactics and continually improve our customer acquisition strategy.
