We recently connected with Evelyn Lemourt and have shared our conversation below.
Evelyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
A few years ago, I purchased an adhesive bra, at a major department store, for a white backless dress. The only color available was a nude/flesh tone. I loved the bra except there was one problem…the nude color against my dark skin was too light and it would show through my dress. I asked the salesperson if the adhesive bra came in darker tones and she replied, “no”.
It was at that moment that I realized there was a need and a niche to fill.
Evelyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started off studying Fashion Design and Merchandising at Drexel University and spent 2 years studying in Paris, France and Florence, Italy. My professional career started in New York City as an Assistant Buyer/Merchandiser and then transitioned to corporate private label and product development.
I moved to Miami, Florida to work at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus as an Assistant Fashion and Public Relations Director.
I always knew that I wanted to start a business with a new and unique product. I knew that it had to be a simple idea and that it had to fill a need. I knew that I had that “a-ha, light bulb moment” when I needed something that didn’t exist nor was available anywhere. The niche to fill was an adhesive bra that was colorized to closely match the skin tone of women of color…Black, Brown and Latina. It’s meant to be worn with strapless, backless and sheer, light-colored clothing.
After a few years of thinking about this product, COVID-19 caused me to seriously give my idea life. Small businesses were born, Black and female owned businesses were quickly growing and getting noticed and highly supported. The time was now.
In 2021, just as we started to emerge from Covid quarantine, I lost my job. It was my deciding moment. It was time to take a risk, take that leap of faith and make a dream a reality.
3 Shades of Brown recently launched as a startup business. Having a clear vision together with my product development experience enabled me to create The Second Skin Adhesive Bra within one year.
A vision, passion, belief in yourself and your product, drive and hard work are just a few of the necessary qualities that one needs in order to be successful and run a successful business. Being well organized is also key.
The Second Skin Adhesives Bra is unique and the only one of its kind. It can and will be a global product.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
3 Shades of Brown launched as an E-COMMERCE business. It’s on Facebook and Instagram. Key to success is advertising and a constant flow of content, content, content
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I do manufacture my product. My priority was to make an all American made product. I researched materials vendors, a design team for packaging, a packaging vendor and a marketing team.
This is a very detail oriented process…from concept and design to packaging, pricing and shipping/distribution.
