Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eve Liu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Eve, appreciate you joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I think I belong to a very different genre in the mainstream illustration market in the U.S. I always choose more gentle and feminine themes in my personal genre in the East Asian atmosphere because I was deeply influenced by Japanese city pop culture and yaoi manga culture when I was growing up. However, I once wondered why the girly genre was always considered “not great enough” but afterward, I figured out that this is the aesthetic I truly like, and I will always stick to this kind of depiction until I am bored of it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I think my dream was to be a manga artist, but I found it hard to support myself as a financially independent person in the English market, and my mother had given so much to support me in art school that I didn’t want to rely on her anymore. So I put a lot of effort into building up my illustration portfolio and got a lot of commercial work out of it, which I think I’m very grateful for to be able to do art-related work and make a living out of it, not to mention being able to continue to draw things.
Over the past two years of illustration freelancing, I have been introduced to the branch of motion design, so I have explored more dynamics in my design works, which has allowed me to gain more attention and opportunities to work on diverse projects. This really continues my passion as a creator, and I think I will devote more time to learning about animation and new technology trends in the future.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding part is that I am rarely bothered by the so-called “value of work” I used to work full time in a company before. I think it is an excellent experience, but even if I don’t have this job, I can still find my passion in art creation and keep busy for this; this kind of busy actually satisfied me a lot in my lifetime.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
When your portfolio is mature, I think besides sending promotion emails and logging on to various freelancing platforms, the mainstream SNS platforms are still the best way to let clients know about you; I have many clients who contact me through Instagram/Twitter/Behance. I have a lot of clients who came to me through Instagram/Twitter/Behance.
