We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eve Dawes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Eve, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?

I’m no stranger to problem solving, my other company Dawes Custom Cosmetics which makes custom lipsticks got decimated during Covid when everyone was wearing masks and no one was wearing lipstick which is how I pivoted to blogging and utilized all of my fashion and beauty experience. Luckily, that survived and is still going, so now I have 2 companies on the go but the biggest hit I took was…

When I first started Glamour and Gains I, like most content creators, bloggers and anyone who has a website, plowed so much time and energy into learning and executing finely honed SEO. And it worked! For a while anyway. My blog took off within months, gaining enough traffic to be on Mediavine and start attracting clients. I even worked as a content creator for Google Web Stories for 6 months.

There were always Google core updates that would cause fluctuations but nothing prepared me for the September 2023 update which shook most bloggers Worlds. Still to this day my site is down to 25% of its original traffic. To those who don’t know how bloggers earn money, back then and even today, it’s through ads and affiliate links. In a nutshell, the more views you have, the more you earn. So a lot of bloggers and editors saw their income crash hard.

However, I still make a full time income from content creation and writing because as bad as I am at some things, 3 of my skills are tenacity, problem solving and an obsession with analytics. I looked for more ways to get traffic than just from Google and diversified into creating content for clients and YouTube which I love. I get so much support and training from YT and it’s where my creativity thrives. I was a professional dancer and have been on stage since the age of 3, so filming is like a continuation of that but without a live audience. The bonus is the content I use for the blog works as the outline for a YouTube video and vice versa.

I wish I knew how much support there was for creators on YouTube from YouTube. I would have jumped onto that platform much sooner if I had.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

Being able to help people feel confident is by far the most rewarding aspect. Whether that’s helping someone find the perfect wedding guest outfit or a lipstick color they feel amazing wearing, or a skincare or makeup product that finally works for their skin.
